I'd like to say it depends on their skill (and probably half of it DOES,) but a large factor is due to the particular cards they have. I mean hell, that kid had a Kyogre hat. There's gotta be some money there. >_>
Yeah, all the kids that got through the tournaments had great cards because their parents would buy them. That's why my friends and I never got very far, even if the small tourneys, because we had to rely on only our playing abilities. Which isn't to say that cards are everything, but if your opponent is equally skilled but has better cards, your opponent's going to kick your ass.
I think they should do a huge overhaul on the rules regarding age. I'm not saying adults should be banned or something, so maybe it's more of card bans than age, I guess.
Years ago when Nintendo still had Game Boy tournaments, the winner of the Pokemon challenge was in his late 20's (but he was special needs so they HAD to let him through.)
