Sorry. I've been a bit busy.

@Arizth: there's a reason why I mentioned shotguns, and trust me, a shotgun killing zone extends beyond 5 meters. The Benelli itself boasts a 50 meter effective range, but obviously 10-20 meters of that would be considered a kill shot. Another thing about shotguns that I mentioned before is that the shotgun is choice weapon at close-range/close-quarter combat. This means within the city proper with your back to a wall or navigating clogged streets or searching inside buildings and rooms. And the shells aren't that heavy.
Try humping half a hundred shells and a cumbersome shotgun all day, and tell me it isn't heavy.
Err...not actually humping, but you know what I mean, I believe. Personally, I believe that close-quarters with a zombie, in any situation, is a surefire way to acquire a craving for brains. I would make it a point to stay in the open, even in an urban environment. Clogged streets are to be avoided, and buildings never entered alone.

On the note of shooting while running, most weapons would become innaccurate whenever you run, not just the shotgun, but with the shotgun, precision aiming isn't needed. Another point to the shotgun is the relatively lack of aiming. One or two shells should put down a zombie in no time.
Sure. Down. But not out. No worse zombie-related death then by a crawler whose spine you blew out a few seconds ago.
Also, let's talk recoil. Shotguns kick like a mule. Against one zombie, at close range, I figure I would use it. Any other range, a pistol will serve just as well, but make less noise and weigh far less.
As well, noise. There are no silenced shotguns, as far as I know.

As for zombies, I'm considering the Left 4 Dead model where they can run, climb, and do whatever it takes to get to you. The possibility of mutation into something worse is highly likely, but given enough trauma, the zombies will die. Obviously the rule of thumb of attacking any zombie is to shoot it in the head or somehow disrupt its nervous system, like breaking the neck/spine. Eventually, give or take a couple months to a full year, I'd expect the zombies to completely decompose.
Again, if we consider the L4D runner model, then the need for an accurate weapon that doesn't weigh and slow you down only goes up. A rifle or a pistol would serve you much better at picking them off from a distance then a shotgun would, when you tried to engage them from arms length.

Another thing about the pistols: I chose the glock/beretta/HK and even the Colt SA M1911A is because of availability to the public/ease of access. Obviously, I'd prefer a gun that didn't use pussy 9mm cartridges, but you gotta use what you've got on hand. Many weapons I mentioned are the preferred types, but most likely unavailable unless you're in the military or raid a military base (or get it for free). I don't think gunshops stock benelli M1014s or M4 carbines.
True. But I know some people.
Seriously. I know some guys in the Russian mob who would probably spot me an AK if I could convince them that there we zombies about.
But, ignoring that bit, I've shot a Beretta and a M19 before, and because of their light weight and availability of ammo and the gun itself, it would be my weapon of choice anyway.
Remember, Zombies don't wear armor. There's no need to splurge on AP rounds and assault carbines when a simple 9mm to the skull will do the job just as well.
