I went back and played some Left 4 Dead, just to see if I'm being an ass with the whole Shotgun thing.
Four expert campaigns later, I think I've covered just about every situation we've talked about, with each weapon.
Again, Shotgun?
Reloading. Is. A. Bitch. And. A. Half.
I think I would still stick with a carbine or a rifle.
Unless a tank shows up.
But I doubt that would happen in real life.
But, if it did, moar shotgun.
I find that AR ammo gets used up real fast against a Tank, and moreso on advanced and Expert, which is why I always make sure someone, if not me, has a shotgun on hand to unload damage. Give or take, I'd take the AR over the shotgun anyday, but as I said, if you can't find a AR, the shotgun is the next best thing for urban and even suburban combat.
It annoys me to no end that the Tank doesn't have a head to headshoot. Yeah, the guy eats AR rounds for breakfast.
Still, I did manage to take him down by myself by blowing through all my hunting rifle rounds while everyone else was busy...let me remember...One guy screaming and running in a circle, one guy being chewed on by the smoker, and one being clawed by the hunter.
Fucking miracle that I survived that, but I digress.
In real life, I don't think you could fire off all ten rounds from the auto-shotgun without bruising a bone or two, especially without prior training. A rifle of some form is much more beginner friendly, and I don't think any good contingency plan should be based on soloing the experience. As such, I would think it better to plan for beginner marksmen as well, so I still think one should avoid shotguns.
I think the Uzi has worked better for me then the Shotgun when swarmed, for instance, but that may just be a personal thing.
