Has anyone here ever played the game Critical Point?
The "True" ending was with a Robot...or maybe Cyborg?, girl. In only about a hundred years. And, with an artificial womb, you had a child.
NOSTALGIA ALARM!
I totally remember that game. But I always got the '18' year old girl that helps you out.
Anyway, this is the thing. Nothing has passed the Turing test [afaik] so machines still can't effectively fool humans into thinking that they are in fact, human. When that day hits, we will have to think about what we are doing to mankind with our development. Perhaps it would be a good thing, but to leave them only more dynamic than us in certain areas. But that's a topic that would drift slightly from our aim here.
Oh, and to Kais86... Your thinking is wrong. I'm pretty strange, and I have social 'encounters' quite often, even with the opposite sex. Now, I can't see anyone I know buying one in a hurry, but if one or two of them got bored, I can see my friends purchasing a sentient robot out of interest. If they got attached to it, that would be creepy but no helping it. Who cares. Let people be who they are, and happy. Some people might not have the time around their jobs to maintain a relationship with a caring person, so this would allow them to keep sane [if they were that dependant]. Plus, she wouldn't divorce the owner and take half his property and she always puts out.
"Stranger things have happened."
- What's your initial reaction to this? And how do you feel about it after thinking it over?
When I first heard about it [a little while back], I was not surprised one bit. It's just like putting a body on a fleshlight. More simulation. People who get attached to them is a shame for them, but whatever works. I feel neutral, and don't really mind. Society is pretty fucked as-is, why stop some people from having their own kind of fucked up.
- Technosexuality.
Huh?
- What if somebody you knew did something like this?
I'd be interested to hear their reasons [as most of the people I know are intellectuals] but would support them in their choice. It's not my right to judge how they live, and I actually don't mind anyway.
- If robots could become more humanoid, almost on the level of humans (think Chobits), would this be more popular?
:3 Chii? Actually, I don't think this will be widely accepted until a majority accepts it. You know, some people are still afraid of computers and that they might go crazy even though they are just boxes of components that keep the world running smoothly [argh, going off topic again] but it's the same with this. Fear of the unknown and death, mankind's greatest fears [imho]. We don't know if they will eat us or give us a hug.
