So after looking over the replies on the language thread in srs discussion, noticed a lot of people are learning Japanese. Just wondering. What got you into learning in the first place? How far are you guys in your study? Plan on going to Japan sometime? Hoping to get to know some more Japanese language ethusiasts :D

Well, for starters, I started learning Japanese roughly a few months ago. And I mean serious learning not just "Konnichiwa kawaii neko desu desu desu desu". My reason? I got impatient with waiting for subs and rather just watch the anime, drama or read the manga without translation or subtitles. But now that I've actually gone into trying to study it, I began to enjoy writing and learning the kanji that many people dread. Plus, while I learn Kanji I learn how to say it in Chinese by just asking my parents. I do plan on going to Japan in the future for vacation, possibly work if I can but I doubt I can find work in a science field there. Seems only English teachers get hired on the spot lol.

i just started this past week, using Rosetta stone and some e-books to help me out. like you i plan on taking a vacation there sometime, and ive toyed around with the idea of moving there. but thats gonna have to wait for a while if i ever do.
but as of now my main reason is so i can assist in translations and to make it easier on my penpal =D

I've taken three years of honors Nihongo in high school ^.^ plan on moving there, or at least vacationing. probably need to keep studying in college though.

Yeah... I'm still studying it right now. Using some understanding from chinese and e-book, i manage to learn a bit. Though i'm still learning it. As for going to Japan is in the future plan.

I started a while ago,french got boring and I was interested in anime,I think about learning another language after Japanese.

I wanted to learn Japanese for sometime now, and actually started about a month ago. My reason for trying to learn it is that it is an interesting language, but I want to try to learn it since I already have French and Latin under belt. Another reason, is that my girlfriend has a great deal of knowledge of it and I want to be able to keep up with her since we plan to go to Japan for visit sometime in the near future. I don't plan on living there, but it would be interesting to leave the US for once somewhere and see the sights.

Rosetta Stone sucks :P Just saying, I don't like it but I heard some people learn from it. I just don't learn like that.

I'm not learning and i don't plan to. but if i was, it would be BOOBIES!

If you guys haven't or aren't using these tools already you guys should get firefox (rikaichan) :D

well what ive gather so far is that the way it teaches you is to push you into the pool so to say, in the deep end, with no prior teaching. and tells you to swim. some people work good like that. but some dont. so far im doing okay i think. im avrageing 85%+ per core lesson and i normaly do them untill i can get a good 90 or 95.

I was actually thinking of getting Rosetta Stone for Spanish since it's spoken a lot where I'm from. I was wondering how well it worked. I do have prior knowledge of Spanish and can pick up words, but I by no means can speak it or have a conversation with it.

I guess the "throw you in the deep end" isn't the way I learn, at least not with languages. Funny story, that's how I learned how to swim. My teacher just pushed me into the deep end, what a guy.

I like getting the basics of the language down first so I can at least say a few things and make a sentence. With Rosetta stone it just tells you stuff like. "Otoko no hito", and you have to click the picture. I rather learn what each particle does, sentence structure, kanji. But its more work. But that's just me. I also like writing out the kanji too. You learn to read, write and speak the language if you start with a good foundation with the basics.

But personally, not a fan of Rosetta's stone style of learning. Plus, it just teaches you some words and some sentences. Doesn't cover the conjugations of verbs. I didn't go through more than the 2nd chapter so I don't know if it actually does though.

yea i know what you mean, which s why im using a dl'ed textbook also. i want to take a course in it to. but for now it works just fine. i mean a week ago i would have no idea what otoko no hito ment. but now i know it refers to men. and otokono hitotachi wa means group of men. if ANYTHING its a start.

I voted BOOBIES! XD I..I mean...I've been looking at it. I cant really tell you much since I havent taken it seriuosly yet. But I might take a serious chinese class but then again~procrastination. So yeah Im still thinking about it~^^;

After this summer, I'm going to be in my 3rd year of Japanese. I wasn't learning much taking the class provided to me, (My teacher doesn't take her job seriously, the school just hired the token Japanese teacher to teach a Japanese class.) so I decided to use Rosetta Stone as well. That's been helping a lot, but I think it would be difficult to properly learn the language solely using RS.

But yeah, thats about it...

I've quit my studies in computer science and am planning to study Japanese/English starting september (I'm french fyi). If everything goes well, my course should last 5 years with a training course in Japan during my 3rd year.

My reasons to learn languages? I'm lying if said it wasn't because of anime, but I've learned to appreciate the japanese language and my several trips to japan made me want to know more about the country itself.

Final goal? I'm seriously planning to go live in Japan, no matter what.

i've been learning japanese 2 years and still continuing.
at 1st year i studied it when i'm still in my home country then last year's april,i study abroad in tokyo,japan.now i'm currently living in 小岩(koiwa),tokyo.
the reason for studying is because i've been such a maniac for japanese manga,game and animation since little.

Anyhow, before i decide to quit .. i was thinking that some time i will go to Japan ..
I don't have any intention to stay .. But Japanese culture is kinda interest me
Fireworks festival .. Tanabata .. etc etc

Fuck yeah! Boobies! Nice, I'm taking Japanese classes this coming fall. Too bad my university doesn't offer it, I'm just taking it at one of those elementary schools where they teach Japanese Children; Teens and adults, Japanese. I hope they don't assume I am Japanese because of my skin colour and put me in a hardcore class.

Right on brother/sister. I plan on going to Japan but whether or not I decide to live there all depends on if I can get employed there or not. Bottom of my heart I really want to live there and just experience the Japanese life. I'm probably going to be labelled a traitor for loving the Japanese so much (being Chinese myself) haha.

Yup, you got to put in some work and memorize the hiragana, katakana and then the dreadfuk Kanji that nobody seems to like. Hope you change your mind and decide to study it :D

My main Purpose is going to Japan

I self-studied in Highschool for 3 years, that pretty much covers most common vocabulary and conversation. In result, I can play/read/watch anything RAW. (KAnji is still a bitch though)

Now I'm attending a real course, to study it more deeper.

I don't know why some people avoid studying languages like the plague, and always blame "Time" and "I'm Busy" as their excuse.
