From what i understand, federal money cannot be used for abortion by Planned Parenthood, which does far more than abortions anyways. My feelings on abortion have become more complicated recently(I am uncomfortable with abortions done after the first trimester), but i still don't support this bill
And this bill is coming from the same party that vetoed the violence against women act because it provided some measure of protection for LGBT,Native American and illegal immigrant women....because apparently there lives are not sanctified enough to be worthy of protection. So fuck them
Are you perhaps talking about the Violence Against Women Act?
You do realize...how fucked up the bill was, right?
I noticed this thread when I went through my old post, and seeing your post made me interested enough to read on the actual bill.
I was going to make a thread based on a similar topic but saw this one instead.
What exactly was fucked up about the bill?
Now before I begin I don't know much about the Native American issue, which is why I won't touch it.
Well let me start of with the one that caught me eye first.
It gives incentive for immigrant women to committed several federal and state crimes against others(men) for the purpose of fraudulently obtaining legal immigrations papers.
There's also that whole thing about those accused of abuse(men...) loose a lot of legal rights.(due process, right to confront your accuser...pretty much an abrogation of our constitutional rights)
You wanna know what's the kicker though?
The bill doesn't really attack the real root of domestic violence.
How does it give incentive to commit crimes for citizenship? The only crime i could think of it incentive is making a false claim of abuse
As for the loss of legal rights for the accused, i wasn't aware of that and don't support that. With that said, i think that could be addressed without scraping the bill entirely. Plus, the republican opposition to it didn't seem rooted in that, but more not caring about certain types of women. For example, when it comes to Native American woman, if they are raped or assaulted in tribal land by a non-native it is extremely difficult for the tribe to bring any sort of legal action against that person without the protection afforded by the violence against women act. And again, they are the ones who keep talking about they are trying to protect life no matter what
Also, what do you feel is the root cause of domestic violence?
