Given that people use resources, if the human race gets an extended lifespan (or, worse, immortality) the world will eventually become an unpleasant world to live in.
As for giving a select people immortality -- it doesn't sit well on me (or likely, the rest of the world) when anyone has the power of life and death over the human race, especially one that chooses life for himself and his cronies and death to everyone else. I'd suspect that such a person would become the target of assasination quite regularly.
