I also agree. Being the only immortal would be VERY lonely. If no-one else is immortal/has extended life, I would want to have an average length of life. If I can make other people immortal/have longer lives, I'd go for it.
Given that people use resources, if the human race gets an extended lifespan (or, worse, immortality) the world will eventually become an unpleasant world to live in.
As for giving a select people immortality -- it doesn't sit well on me (or likely, the rest of the world) when anyone has the power of life and death over the human race, especially one that chooses life for himself and his cronies and death to everyone else. I'd suspect that such a person would become the target of assassination quite regularly.
True, by having that power I'd probably get a God complex, but I'd enjoy it xD. And if someone was immortal, assassination attempts would do nothing. Of course, no-one would have to know that you are immortal (other than those you intend to make immortal).
I am sure someone will notice your disturbing lack of dying at some point.. And as far as real immortality, where you can't die or be killed, then that is probably not likely to ever be possible.
I suppose you could kill yourself if you were immortal.. I think. :\
That wouldn't be immortality if you can be killed. I think the definition of immortal is you can't die, sick, aging something like that.
Extended life that come with an
extended youth, where I can have my young body longer than anyone and still can die sounds good. I'd pick that if that's the case.
Sure immortality can be fun without being sick, aging to an old fart and dying, but more serious issues and drama about being immortal will come later. Also death can be considered as a luxury for immortals you know. Immortals may longing for the joy of death in some point of their life.
