Fakku servers go offline due to exceeded bandwidth?

We exceeded our monthly bandwidth a few hours ago, so until I pay for more the file server will be down. Shouldn't be more than a few hours, depends on how much I have to pay.

Well this was kind of predictable but thats not the problem. All free porn sites run this natural course and in the end it never works out. I suggest They need to put a bottleneck on all these new users somehow. Maybe do what demonoid did and make it an invite only site. Maybe restrict number of downloads a day. Maybe get rid of the view online feature that most leachers use. Gotta do something or pretty soon we will be running out of bandwidth on the first week.

In free community's, there are always users willing to contribute, out of the goodness of their hearts. Sure, administrators pay a lot to keep their sites running, but if users contribute because they like the free services, then good. If there are leechers that go and categorically download EVERYTHING in one go, then IP Bans spring to mind.

Well....I'm not THAT new. To be honest I just looked for a few months before I actually started contributing. I was there while it was constantly screwing up and that sucked. But are you really ok with the site just bleeping on and off?

I appreciate you uploading pictures, but that really does deserve a "Way to further the bandwidth problem".

I'm sure this will be resolved fairly fast when users donate. If Jacob or the other Administrators feel that it needs fixing, then they will take steps in the right direction.

But it just seems like we could avoid all these unnecessary conditions. Making users register. Limiting the download option. Just a few changes could really lift some stress off the server. It's not like people want to keep donating forever.

Yeah I think registering and limiting downloads is a good idea. I think a system which limits downloads based on how fast bandwidth is being taken up is a good idea - look at average amount of users and base it on that. If the server can handle 500 manga downloads per user per day, then go right ahead and lift the limit up that high or maybe even have no limit as the average user won't go that high but some users might want to leech a lot and if the server can handle it why not.

But if the server can't handle these leechers then maybe if possible it could be coded to put quotas on the user's ip as well as through cookies when the bandwidth is running out too fast.

What could be done is that people need to actually make an account before being able to view and download online content. That would cut the traffic alittle (or alot). Or, Jacob could make it so that your IP address is only allowed to download one thing from the site per day / (minutes or hours), unless you sign up. This site has tons of potential but the problem is addressing the problem without making it worse in one way or the other.
I could write almost a whole page on this forum about what can be done / added / taken off but its really not my place. :P

Again, I make the argument of "That's exactly what FAKKU was made to counter" All it would do is make the forums more spammy from lurkers who didn't want to sign up anyway, and wastes space on the main server (because MySQL databases grow, you know. They don't get their space magically)

IP addresses have come up before, along with a few strategies I have suggested to counter users with dynamic IP addresses. I use the Dynamic IP trick often with limiting websites, so I know good ways fight against users like that. Good idea about limiting, however I think that even registered users should only be able to download a certain amount, just because you sign up, doesn't mean you have the sense to not leech until this kind of thing happens.

Just because it's not your place, doesn't mean you can't suggest things. Sure, you may get some harsh replies, but I'm sure the administration team would like to hear ways to improve (even though FAKKU is awesome already).

Also, I would like to say to all the users who are about to hit the reply button, make sure that you read the rest of the topic. Don't suggest things that have been suggested before, unless you are expanding on it.

We have to limit downloads on everyone. It's takes no time at all to register so we should definitely just limit the downloads.

Registered users should be limited too. I think they should only get around 5-10 extra downloads. Just because people register, doesn't mean they have any common sense. Sure, most of us do, but I reckon that most registered users will just leech anyway. Registration means nothing to your average lurker, they'll do it and kill your bandwidth there anyway.

Thats kinda what I just said......lol.

But I don't think it should change even a little even if you are registered.

Yeah, that whole "we can't count on donations" argument would be valid if it weren't for the fact that way back when, we raised $1,000 in 5 days to pay for a new server. /gg

Anyway you do have a point there with limiting member downloads and I have an add-on to that. Downloads COULD have something to do with posting on the forums.( Although it would take alot of work to filter out all random crap) For example, a new registered member can only download , lets say 5 doushinji a day, and someone with lets say 50 posts can download 10-20 a day. Something along those lines. However as I said before, it would take much work to filter out all the random crap that will be posted just to download doushinji. But, it will stop some lurkers since it does take time to make 50 posts, even though that was just an example.

I think that the advantageous downloading ability's should be given to people with people with a much higher postcount than that. Somewhere in the 500-1000 range. By then, obvious detrimental users will have been rooted out and deleted. Possibly higher downloading rights would be given to people who have proved their non-retardedness by making posts that get recognized by an administrator. But then again, that would make too much work for administrators, and lead to users complaining about an unfair system. Let's not dwell on the subject of how much/who should get the right to download, because most users will just twist it around into their favour.

instead of 500 how about set the bar lower like 300 or 350 so you get the privilege too :D

No but seriously even though I agree with the idea of no forced registration, people who aren't registered and with less than 20 posts should really be limited to around 10 manga a day. That's plenty for most people, and is enough to keep the mass downloaders away. People like me inbetween 20 and 100(or maybe 300) posts should be limited to maybe 20 or lower, which in my humble opinion, is still plenty.
