By who I am as a person.
I personally couldn't care less about fashion and whatnot. I dress according to what I know looks nice on me. Now, if you think just because you dress in the latest trend you're automatically better than people who don't, there is going to be a lack of respect for you. No, I shouldn't say lack of respect. I just won't care. I rarely ever judge people outside of their personality. Many people recognize me not for who I am though, they recognize me by the fact that I wear two pairs of headphones. Once they get to know me a little though, that of course changes.

I absolutely agree with Heizan on this point.

Everyone may wish to identified however they want, but that not how the real world works.
First impressions have massive impact on how you're identified by others and whether people like it or not it's mostly by appearance.
This is also true. I remember I was in Colorado maybe 2 years ago having lunch, when this girl walked by. She was wearing clothing I've only seen in porn. Huge V top, super tight which seemed to be made of some sort of elastic material or something, hot pink, and her skirt barely reached the bottom of her ass. For all I know she could have been a porn star on the way to work.
Was I thinking about respect? Obviously not. I was thinking actually that she must be rather desperate to dress to that level like that in public. She is free to dress as she likes, but she should also have some respect towards the community. I like the Japanese rule of avoiding
meiwaku--being a nuisance of others. It's like the opposite of our Golden Rule here. Do
not do to others what you would
not done to you.
