Has anyone thought of this: our planet is moving, the solar system is moving, the entire universe is moving, at very very high speeds. So if you only move forward or back in the time dimension, u will mostly end up in empty space. If you are really unlucky, in a star.
Even assuming time travel is possible, you have to propell yourself through vast spans of space. And the universe is still expanding. So this problem is not a smal one to resolve.
Personally, I am inclined to believe that nature will do whatever it can to resolve paradoxes. If you are interested you can look into quantum physics, specifically electron diffraction and what happens when you have a device that can track the electron through the 'diffraction grating' to see a very intriguing example of how nature prevents paradoxes.

If we've reached a point in time where we are capable of time travel, I'm pretty sure that we will be able to factor in that stuff. Yes, those are some pretty complex equations, but hey, I'm sure we'll have robots and stuff in the future to do it.
I personally don't think time travel is possible, or at least if it is then the people from the future have very strict rules about it. Like, who wouldn't abuse that power? I sure as hell would.
(Actually, what I'd probably do if I had time travel powers is go back in time and kill myself, just to see what would happen)

It either happens or it doesn't.

-God put his creations in charge of being the stewards of creation. Destroying it would be bad--but nothing in it can be destroyed. (through means we know of)
-Atheists. There are a lot of them out there. I'm sure out of fear, people would seek to solidify the time-line as we know it anyway. God is a great excuse, but rationality appeals to a wider audience.
Oh, and the time line is already fucked (none of use have noticed). So there probably are some laws in place.

To go forward... accelerate extremely rapidly to great velocity, and maintain it. Time dilation will result, making time go for you slower in relations to the rest of Earth. Then you can circle back and you'll be in the future!
Unfortunatly, if you want to return back to the time you came from... that's next to impossible, so consider it a one way trip.
One possible but uncertain way is to go through a wormhole that doesn't connect to this universe, but rather to a timeframe that's earlier. To do this you need a special rare wormhole that has a exiting event horizon in the universe of the past, while having the enterance where you are at. In addition, a spacecraft that can actually survive the trip while protecting you from harm is also needed. If all that's possible, you can go through the wormhole and arrive in the past, although it is difficult to tell exactly what time in the past you arrived at. This is assuming you actually survive the trip, and that you will continue to survive once you get back.

Well, allowing that time travel is possible, i definitely think there would have to be rules that kept them from influencing the past.

If time travel were possible, then that would mean that there are different dimensions for all the different possible futures(there would have to be an infinite amount of them). I mean, think about it. If one travels to the past and changes it, then what happens to the future that was(or is going to be, I don't know)? And if there aren't any other dimensions, then time travel would have to be a one way trip. Or changing things should be impossible. OR (man, I'm babbling) People could only travel to future.

If there is a time machine, the word 'time' itself will turn obsolete because there will be people who can go back in time and cause time paradoxes. Moreover, the concept of 'past' and 'future' will be lost too because the 'past' can be erased, which will lead to a new 'future'. Heck, you'll have people disappearing and appearing out of nowhere! E.g. The late Princess Diana would still be alive today. Saddam Hussein would probably be killed in his infancy.
In short, TOTAL chaos.

I suppose. I don't recall where I heard about it though, I believe a friend showed me something a while back about astronauts and stuff. I think it's somewhere near or at light speed, though I could be completely off.

Since if that happened, my memories, my thoughts, everything around me would conform to the new changes never knowing what happened.
