As far as languages it depends on the needs of each person , i mean in school to make people learn Chinese or Japanese or any other languages that probably won't be used by most people if they are going to work at some desk jobs is just pointless. And FYI learning Japanese and Chinese is just such a pain in the ASS.
I think people should be allowed to learn the language they want. Maybe not in elementary school (because which elementary school is going to have the funds to teach several languages?), but in middle or high school, they should have a choice. And they should have a lot of choices. Otherwise, it's pointless.
Like I said earlier, my high school only had Spanish, French, and Latin (though French did get cut), and it was required to take two semesters of a language (for the general type of diploma or whatever). It'd be worthless for me to take Spanish because I cannot speak it, quite simple. My tongue cannot make the right sounds. I believe that I will never be able to speak Spanish coherently. As for French, I did't have any plans to ever visit France or any of the countries that speak it, and I also didn't plan on becoming a salesman that would ever need to go to any of those countries. Latin wasn't so much about learning the language as learning about the origins of other things, like medical terms and the roots of words.
Let's say Arabic was required in my school, and I could read it and speak it perfectly. How would that help me? I'm not going anywhere that speaks Arabic. I'm not going to translate books into or out of Arabic. I might as well know Klingon. That's the way I see it. If you're going to devote the time and energy to learning a new language, it should be something worthwhile that you'll use. Otherwise, why not learn a fake language from a TV show?
