Ironically, most people who shoot themselves in the head will survive if they receive medical attention to prevent them from bleeding out. However, since most shoot themselves through the temples, they merely destroy their frontal lobe, leaving them essentially trapped in their own body. The proper way is to take out the medulla, since that controls circulation and respiration.
In a more serious note, going through with such a deed is extremely life-changing. It's always the first kill that gets to soldiers on the battlefield and after too many, it's very common for soldiers to go through shell shock. The best example would have to be Vietnam veterans.
