Excuse me for poking my head in, not the best expert in race:(Mixed, like hurricane)
Isn't racism when one makes unfounded expectations, based on somebody's race?
As a result, claiming that a dark skinned actress could not fulfil the role as well as a light one would be inherently racist. Light>Dark, in this instance.
However, I wouldn't equate sexual preference with racism. Finding, in my case, the extremes in skin tone (dark/pale) more attractive than medium shades has nothing to do with how I expect a woman to behave. BUT, saying that somebody likes red haired women, because they have strong personalities, would be racist. (Red hair=flaming bitch, in this instance)
What we're really examining is loyalty to the artist's intent (dark, young girl) vs. effective marketing. I applaud the producers in their honesty, and hope that they continue such small favours.
Oh, and the "fans" believing that a black girl couldn't portray their black character as well is racist. (Black=/=good performance)
If you're really wondering: My mother is Creole, light/medium. Father is Prussian. When my parents married, my father's parents disowned him, so I don't know any of my white family. BUT, my father moved us into a white supremacist community when I was a child of 10. I grew up with black family, and racial tension in my surroundings. Identify black, medium skin--red/brown textured hair--brown/green eyes.
