Science tell us that we don't know the answer, but that nothing indicates that a soul (as people tends to believe it is) should exists. Of course, our current knowledge of a good bunch of the nature is still incomplete, but still. By other hand if you change your definition of soul there can fit with what we know.
For example if you consider soul by "exist outside your body", you still exists in a lot of fragments in the memory of different persons. Or if you consider that trespassing the barriers of time is a mean of soul, each one of our actions makes a uncountable amounts of change in the universe in the smallest and not so small scales. Or you can see by this other way: reborn, your matter will be transfered to a number of different living beings along the centuries and you can't say they haven't something of you!
But yeah, as most people understand soul is that memory, conscience and personality remains, at least at most degree. Science currently can't give us a full and detailed answer about that, maybe it will do in the future, but not today. There exists the out-body while you're at a blink of death, but we haven't a proper way to measure and analyze them, so doesn't count that much.
So, when something is still unknown the proper is to say "I don't know". But yeah, that doesn't say that after said that we can't imagine a world of possibilities. In my case I'm an agnostic animist: I believe in the soul and spirit strength of all matter, I believe that the thermodynamical have a part of our owns on it and in that way we reborn and keep living for a while (or non-conventional living things like viruses or rocks does, too). I always felt that everything is somehow connected. We have a lot of small souls inside us! I believe.
Your post does a good job outlining how I feel as well. Although I believe that the only reason why we can identify that we
don't know certain things is because science has brought us to that level of intellect. Basically we truly don't know anything without it.
The universe recycles itself. If anyone needs proof of that just study decomposition, the death of a star, the regeneration of celestial bodies, etc etc etc. So while I am not AS spiritual as you seem to be when it comes to a "soul" well...we're darn close. Which is pretty neat, but also very interesting. Basically...we are full of billions of years of ancient space matter, some of which may have had a consciousness. This concept comforts me, and also why I believe that the feeling of unity we crave is with one another and not any obscure, invisible, powerful organism.

Through not-so-deep mediation and an altered state of consciousness, one has came up that the biological body does not own a soul but the soul owns a physical body to experience its projection onto the physical time/space locality.
Instead of the usage of the word 'soul', let's switch it with the word 'mind'.
What the mind/soul(either term shall be replaceable with one another in this post) in my sense of the word; It is the compartmentalization of the universe that is experiencing and self reflecting on its very own nature. From Universe, down to the Cosmic mind, down to the Galactic mind, down to the Star System mind, Down to the Planetary mind, down to the Species mind, and fast forward to the individual mind; the soul/mind of an individual is there to experience what is "Reality" and explore the novelties that manifest inside the holographic universe. Once physical bodily death has come to biological vessel the soul/mind then goes on and reconnects with the higher compartments of the universe.
Also remember to not believe in any spiritual teachings that was not gained by yourself through deep thought, insight, and experience.
EXACTLY! You took the words out of my mouth lol. "Soul" is nothing more or less than our perceived individual consciousness. It reminds me of something I pondered on after my deconversion that I later found out was a concept first introduced by Carl Sagan ( i think. Don't quote me on that source). He presented the idea that we exist as a way for the universe to perceive itself. When I consider all of our scientific endeavors I'm struck by how much it's like a amnesiac using clues and facts to discover more and more about their existence. I'm beginning to ramble though hahaha.
You also touched on perceived reality. Which we all have. This can be altered or skewed (as seen in many mentally ill patients, traumatic life experiences, and personal achievements). I bring this up because the way our brain senses the world around us has a lot to play into questions like the topic of this thread.
Sorry everyone if I sound too much like a psych student, but to learn more about individuality, consciousness and the idea of a soul Carl Jung would be a great psychology Master to learn about. His work is really amazing. Despite people calling Frued the father of all psychology I feel like Jung would give him a run for his money...lol.
I appreciated all this dialogue (read through as much of the thread as I could.) I liked how curt yet polite you were despite the subject matter. I feel as though bluntness is the best response to a lot of these things, despite it being a struggle to converse without contention.
I am an ex-religious individual. Because of this, it's a lot easier for me to understand the POV from both sides. Within the culture of many of the religions I've been exposed to It seems like the word "science" immediately suggests overly technical jargon and applications that only a genius mind can comprehend...this isn't the case at all. I think because of that misunderstanding society has bred fear and confusion when it comes to educating us about our perception of the world around us. This also explains the knee-jerk reaction of the faithful when their beliefs are challenged.
