How is PSN better than XBL Gold exactly?
Tried to find the most "neutral comparison", it's pretty old, need to wait for an update.
This is the service before the reveal of PS4
Besides cheaper, what makes PSN+ better from Gold is the Free Games and Full Trials. Gold just started giving out free games. Starting with AC 2, and Halo 3, While Plus this month will give out, Deux Ex:Human, UC 3, Xcom:EU, Saints Row 3. The Vita will get Orc Attack and Virtue's Last Reward
Because now PSN plus is mandatory for online plays (excepts F2P games like DCUO) expect better service.

The only time I had PSN Plus was as a apology for the hacking incident, and I suddenly had too many games to play. My main problem why I haven't continue subscribing it now is that I don't have a credit card and there are no PSN card vouchers in my country (which is not a surprise for my country)
The way I see it, the "free games" are more akin to a rental service than actual ownership. As soon as your PSN+ account runs up, the games are gone. I do, however, admire the 1 hour trials for full games.
That said, I still think one of XBL stronger points is it's ability to make your online experience better. Sure on PSN you can block other accounts. But on XBL, you have more options, such as blocking, reporting, reviewing and even muting other players. Granted, that system is sometimes exploited by idiots, but that's why Microsoft employs a team of moderators to keep the peace and investigate each case reported to them. I have also heard of Microsoft's customer service being several degrees better than Sony's, but can't personally comment on that myself.
So, yeah. I agree that PSN+ has some cool stuff on it's side, but I still strongly prefer XBL for all it does for players. I do hope that PSN get's better over time as I really do think it's MS charging for Gold that made it such a good online service. But again, I still think that it mostly chalks up to personal preference as I'm not convinced that one service is wholly better than the other at this moment.

My mistake. I've only had XBL for a few months now, and whenever I get on, I never really see any deals, but that could have easily been due to my lack of experience. As for PS+, I never made a subscription, but in the corner, I always see the announcements of either games up to 60% off, free games, and even Beta access to games I never even heard of at the time, and every time I got on my PS3, it looked like it was something new every single day, so my thought process would thus lead me to the conclusion that Sony is just throwing games at you.
As for me, I don't exactly have a steady income, so I need to manage my money more so than the average person would. To you, it's an insignificant amount, but to me, it's a tiny hole adding up to my other expenses.
It's only $10 over the course of a year. that's less than the cost of a bottle of coke every month. I'm by no means rich, but I do know how to keep to a budget. All I'm doing is refraining from buying junk food and not eating out as often. It also helps that I can walk to work nowadays. And like I mentioned before, Bing is worth checking out if you have a Microsoft account as it's a good way to get free MS points to buy stuff or simply earn a free month of Gold.
When it comes to the deals for Gold members, I think the biggest one going on right now is a free copy of Assassin's Creed 2 and Halo 3, but that's a more recent thing that MS put out there to promote the Xbox One. Fable 3 was also free a couple of days ago as well. There's usually a special tab in the Games section that has the list of the current ongoing sales. You can occasionally catch an event or something going on to coincide with movie releases, holidays, or whathaveyou.
