This is a beginners guide for the people new to the world of visual novels and eroge, and to help you get off to a good start, and get past all the shit, Fakku gives you this list of Must-Play titles. All the Visual Novels listed in this thread are translated to english, since the majority of the Fakku userbase can't read japanese no non-translated VN's will be featured in this list. A list for recommended non-translated VN's might be comming later on though. The recommended titles are listed in no special order, so just because a title is listed first/last won't mean it's the best/worst. Story Synopsis: The story takes place in an ordinary Japanese town, Fuyuki City. Hidden from society, there has been a deadly war going on in this town. Seven sorcerers known as Masters summon a powerful familiar called Servants and they all fight each other till the last one. The last one is said to attain the Holy Grail which will grant them a wish. Only a few knows when this War started and what the Holy Grail is, but the war was about to begin again this year. The main character is Emiya Shirou, who lost his parents in a fire and was adopted by a man who called himself a sorcerer. Admiring his step father, he has been training himself to be a sorcerer. However, he had no talent and he could barely use one type of sorcery. His step father has already passed away, and today he's a sorcerer without any skills or knowledge. He is involved in the War of the Holy Grail when he accidentally summons Saber, who is said to be the strongest servant of all... [size=10]When released on January 30, 2004, Fate/stay night rapidly became one of the most popular visual novels in history, securing the title of "highest selling visual novel" in 2004. A "fan disk" sequel, Fate/hollow ataraxia, was released on October 28, 2005, which became one of the top selling visual novels of 2005. The popularity of the visual novel lead to the formation of the "Fate Project", which in cooperation with Geneon Japan and Studio Deen produced a twenty-four episode anime series based on the original story in 2006. During that same year, a PS2 port for Fate/stay night entitled Fate/stay night[Réalta Nua] was scheduled for a Fall/Winter release, but was pushed back to 2007. A prequel known as Fate/Zero was produced through a collaboration with fellow visual novel company Nitroplus, which could be obtained prior to the official release date at Comiket 2006.[/h] â– Fate/Hollow Ataraxia â– Tsukihime Story Synopsis: A man wakes up wounded in a small village of animal-people, where he is being nursed back to health by a girl, Eruruu, and her family. However, he cannot remember anything of his past: how he came to be wounded in the forest, his own name, or why or how a mysterious mask came to be attached to his face, unable to be removed. Eruruu's grandmother gives him a name -- Hakuoro -- and he is invited to stay at the village. In debt to these people, and with nowhere else to go having no memories, Hakuoro stays with the village and helps the people, bringing harvest to their barren fields. However, the land is being brought into war, and the feudal lord hears of these rumors and starts collecting their food as a tax. Hakuoro then finds himself entwined with these people and the uprising of a revolt army, all while wondering just who he really is. [size=10]The Utawarerumono series was first released as a Japanese video game for the PC on April 26, 2002 by Leaf and Aquaplus. A DVD-ROM edition was later released on December 12, 2003. Unlike most turn-based strategy games, the story is linear and there is no voice acting in the PC version. A PlayStation 2 port, featuring a new battle system by Flight Plan (of the Summon Night series), was released on October 26, 2006 in Japan. The PS2 port included voice acting and several other changes to enhance gameplay. Across the semi-monthly chart of top 50 best-selling bishojo games sold nationally in Japan, the PC version of Utawarerumono ranked 1st in the last two weeks of the April 2004. It ranked 2nd in the first two weeks and 27th in the last two weeks of May.[8] It then ranked 16th and 29th in June before dropping out of the chart. The PlayStation version of the game sold over 82,000 units in three days.[/h] â– Tears to Tiara Story Synopsis: It is May 1, 2017, 12:51 p.m. Without warning or explanation, seven people are suddenly trapped at a depth of 167 feet in the Marine Sea Park "LeMU." Water, air and food are in short supply, and LeMU's protective bulkhead can only withstand the pressure of the water for 119 hours. To top it off, there's a mysterious virius in the sea outside. Time is running out! The bonds among the seven people trapped under the ocean grow stronger as they fight to find a way to escape and survive the danger that threatens them. These are bonds of friendship, and bonds of love. But time waits for no one and the zero hour slowly, steadily approaches. With a climax that packs the ultimate in surprises, what could happen? [size=10]Ever 17: The Out of Infinity is a Japanese science fiction visual novel produced by KID, originally released on August 29, 2002 for the Playstation 2 and Dreamcast. A Windows version, Ever 17: The Out of Infinity Premium Edition, was released on May 16, 2003. In December 2005, Hirameki International released an English edition of the PC version in the United States. Ever 17 is a part of the Infinity series by KID. The other entries in the series are Never 7: The End of Infinity, Remember 11: The Age of Infinity, and 12Riven ?the ?climinal of integral?, all of which take place within the same universe.[/h] â– Never 7 -The End of Infinity- â– Remember 11 -The Age of Infinity- Story Synopsis: Takumi is a high school student. He is withdrawn and is not interested in 3D things. In his town, a mysterious serial murder case happens and people get panicked. One day, when he chats on the internet, a man suddenly contacts him and gives him an URL. He goes to the website and finds a blog image that suggests a next murder case.... On the next day, it really happens.... [size=10]ChaoS;HEAd is a Japanese visual novel developed by 5pb and Nitroplus with gore, psychology, and science fiction elements that was released on April 25, 2008 for the PC. A port of the game, tentatively named Chaos;Head Noah, for the Xbox 360 console is currently in development and is slated for release in 2009. The game is described by the development team as a "Delusional Science NVL". The game's premise revolves around a high school student named Takumi Nishijo who unknowingly walks into the scene of a gruesome murder on his way home. More mysterious events starts happening afterwards as more gruesome murders occurs in the area. Takumi struggles to cope with reality and the delusions he experiences as he tries to avoid getting caught by the perpetrator behind the chain of murders.[/h] â– Zoku Satsuriku no Jango â– Gekko no Carnevale â– Phantom of Inferno â– Jingai Makyou Story Synopsis: Fuminori Sakisaka has a traffic accident which kills his parents and leaves him heavily injured. When he has a brain surgery to save his life, his perception of the world changes: everything he sees becomes blood, people's looks and voices seem like monsters, and food that normally appeals to him tastes disgusting. As he contemplates suicide in the hospital, Fuminori meets a beautiful girl among the flesh-covered walls. She introduces herself as Saya, and is apparently looking for her father. Fuminori does not want to be separated from Saya, and asks her to live with him. She agrees. However, while to Fuminori, Saya appears as a normal girl when everything else in his point of view is flesh and guts, normal people see it differently — just as he sees normal things as flesh and blood, Fuminori sees actual flesh and blood as normal. Saya is actually an intelligent monster, though what she actually looks like is never revealed (the only revelations are that she is covered in slime and has large tentacles). Her favorite food is human flesh, and her hobby is modifying brains and human bodies. However, as Fuminori genuinely loves Saya, Saya does not kill much for his sake. The truth is revealed when Fuminori comes home to see Saya eating the slime-covered corpse of a girl he knows, which appears as a yellow-green jelly-like thing in Fuminori's eyes. When he tries it, he actually finds the human flesh delicious due to his twisted senses. [size=10]Saya no Uta (Song of Saya) is a visual novel by Nitroplus with horror elements. Some fans consider the plot to be Lovecraftian. Although direct references to the Cthulhu mythos are minimal, the dark, eerie atmosphere reminds people of his works. Nitroplus is also known for the production of the heavily Mythos-inspired Demonbane series.[/h] â– Divi-Dead Story Synopsis: Tomoya Okazaki is a third year high school student who dislikes his life. However, Tomoya finds that his life is about to change when he meets Nagisa. Tomoya's mother (Atsuko) died when Tomoya was young, leaving his father (Naoyuki) to raise him. After the accident, Tomoya's father turned to alcohol and gambling, and held frequent fights with his son. One day, Naoyuki, again arguing with his son, slammed Tomoya against the wall, dislocating Tomoya's shoulder. Ever since then, his father has treated Tomoya nicely, but distantly, as if Tomoya and he were strangers rather than a family. This hurts Tomoya more than his previous relationship with his father, and the awkwardness of returning home leads Tomoya constantly to stay out all night. Additionally, the injury disables Tomoya from participating in his basketball club, and pushes him to distance himself from his school and other activities. Thus his delinquent life begins. Tomoya's psychology is further developed in his dreams of a bleak world. In the first few dreams of that kind, he sees a world which is devoid of all people except for this one girl, whom is never shown but is spoken of. Each time he dreams he finds out more about the world. Later on, Tomoya finds out that the girl has a special ability to fuse junk together to create new things, with which she creates a body for him. Thus he is reborn in this world, and fills time following the girl around. Tomoya conceives that only the two of them are "alive". [size=10]Across the national ranking of bishojo games in amount sold in Japan, the Clannad limited edition PC release premiered at number one twice since its release, and the third ranking brought the PC release down to forty-six out of fifty. The first two weeks of June 2004 held the final ranking for the original release at fortieth place. The Clannad regular edition PC release premiered at number twenty-six in the rankings. The next, and last, two rankings for the regular edition were at thirty-seven and forty-one. In the October 2007 issue of Dengeki G's Magazine, poll results for the fifty best bishojo games were released. Out of 249 titles, Clannad ranked first at 114 votes; in comparison, the second place title, Fate/stay night, got seventy-eight votes. Your thread just reignited my interest in VNs... I finished Fate/Stay Night and Edelweiss already so its time to DL Utawarerumono as I play Ever 17 (which has been sitting on my desktop hard drive for a while).

By the way, is playing Clannad a worthwhile investment? I've already watched the anime (which was awsome) but I'm not sure I really have 50+ hours to use on something I've more or less seen already, especially now that school has started.

Well I have been playing Fate/Stay night for awhile now. I already saw the anime so the game is really cool. Its gonna take awhile for me to play thru the whole thing but I am really looking forward to it. Then I can't wait to try the other games. This is so cool.

Thanks klown for making this thread so that noobies like me can enjoy some great visual novels, I picked EdelWeiss for my first one because I wanted a more lighthearted one (tried Clannad, didn't really like it too much, although the kyou arc was pretty good) and I had a great time, the Mizuki arc was great. I think I'm going to play the Mei arc next and then move on to Fate/Stay Night, and maybe Chaos; Head after that. Once again thanks mate!

Ya I played most of these. (mainly after seeing them on this list)

IMO Muv Luv Alternative is the best VN ever. But I wouldn't say its the best for starters...... You have to read another VN to get to it(in a way 2 VN's in that one) then you get to read Alternative. Plus it would spoil anyone just starting VN's because nothing else would compare haha

But it might be worth mentioning to anyone who hasn't read it

Haven't visit this thread for a while... not that I've made frequent appearances.
Very Comprehensive list though it could use some update since there are many more great visual-novels released and translated

Mahoutsukai no yoru- Despite having only partial translation released, I was hooked and looking forward to the full english patch and even committed on purchasing the license game.(EXPENSIVE AS FUCK!)
The game should fall under the F/SN sub-branch of recommedation as the story revolves around Aoko which is also a character from Tsukihime thus expanding the TYPEMOON/Nasu-verse

Swan Song- Dark, Post-apocalypse survival. I think its one of the underrated title that deserve some recognition. In my opinion, it has one of the best character development in Visual-novel market

Soukou Akki Muramasa- I'm not completely satisfy with AGTH+ATLAS translation combination as the program destroy all the beauty of literature and I am still faintly hope for English translation. Featuring highly stylised mech combat, epic dark plot and loli-girl isn't something that could be easily ignore

Baldr Sky- Same w/ SKM; Moe + Mech = ? You can do the math.
An Absolute requirement on the Recommend list once the Complete English Translation is release

Maji De Watashi ni Koishinasai!- Only partial translation patch was released yet still able to keep me occupied for a week. The story is Heart-warming, Humourous, Moe and to an extent; action-packed. Must play for anyone who generally enjoys visual novel.

Lastly my personal Favorite: Kana Imouto.... A Classic, I wonder why it never was on the list.
