Not exactly on how it's harder than the other, since simply changing the difficulty makes it moot, but more that the playstyle of each version.
Conquest is the classic, ye olde Fire Emblem Gameplay, where there are no "grinding" each level you need to plan on how you share experience and doing something recklessly could mean that there's a chance that you'll get stuck on a level just because you ignore a certain character or you spread the experience to wide and thin between characters.
Birthright has the same playstyle with Awakening, where you can grind, and actually can breath between each level.
Not that it really matters in the end though, as you can just grind in DLC levels for conquest.
BTW, if you have an Awakaning save data, you'll unlock the DLC for "Before Awakening" Free.
