An iPad is not a portable gaming device. It is a tablet. Learn to compare like things. Stop comparing apples to oranges.
I can't help but see a pun there with the apple being apple inc with the earlier iPad 2 reference and oranges being Sony.
Anyways, the 3DS was what, $250? The rumored price for the PSP2 is $300-$350 depending on what model exactly you go for, so I'm not seeing the big difference here. I think what will separate the SKUs in price manly is the 3G. Just like the iPad SKU prices. I'll say fifty bucks being the difference here since most people seem to be "Anti-gadget" and most likely wouldn't take a second look at the 3G model. When you're talking about buying hardware, fifty bucks isn't going to make that much difference at all from the consumer stand point. I hope no one here actually thinks the 3DS price tag is justified, but the PSP2 just fifty bucks more isn't. That's pretty ridiculous. Again though, all just rumored.
The price of the PSP2, if rumors are true, isn't any more expensive than the original PSP when it launched if I remember right. I think the PSP was $249.99 at launch, so a fifty dollar increase over the last 5 years. When you look at it strictly from a hardware stand point, it's actually a good deal. The iPhones are $600-$700 if you just buy them and don't lock yourself into a contract with a provider. Now
that is too expensive. Imagine if Sony priced the PSP2 at those prices, which if you look at the specs, they could. What does the iPhone have that the PSP2 doesn't that wouldn't justify the PSP2 being as equally expensive? The iPhone is reaching out into the gaming community as well, so why shouldn't Sony with the PSP reach out to the smart phone market? If Apple and other phone makers can form their hardware to reach a once untouched audience, then Sony, Nintendo, any brand should be able to as well without being badgered to death before they even show what they can do.
As for the gadgets that are included, I don't really have an opinion one way or the other. If the touch screen (which Nintendo has shown can be a winning "novelty gadget"), SixAxis and touch pad are actually put to good use, then it's certainly great. However, if like Sixaxis in the PS3, it's nothing but a stupid waste of space not really contributing anything to the games, it and the other aforementioned gadgets are completely unneeded and are just uselessly (From the consumer view point anyway) driving up the price for no reason. Let's all hope that doesn't happen. I actually like my games to be fun.
Until I know the price for sure and get to play some of the games, the PSP2 in my opinion is advancing what a portable gaming device can be. If these advancements actually make for better games is to be seen. I don't believe a device should hold itself back, it should constantly move forward adding more and more features and power as long as it makes for a more fun, useful, enjoyable experience.
