I was playing Smash Bros. with some friends and we did a random battle. My friend got Ganondorf and he came in last place. He then said, "That doesn't count because Ganondorf is bottom tier." I was like "what the crap are you talking about" and he went super nerd on me to explain this tier business.
Sounds like another excuse for sucking. Except Carl from Blazblue, he's just hard to use but that's no reason to discount a win.
Tier is pretty important in tournaments. But it shouldn't mean shit in a friendly game. If you're playing random, and you happened to get a low tier character, then suck it the fuck up. You just happened to be unlucky.
In any game, there are some characters that are a good bit stronger than others. Whether it be moves that have more range, damage ... blah, blah blah. But honestly, it's pretty damn important in tournament games. Since they're playing for money and whatnot, they need to use the best characters they can. Take a game like Marvel vs Capcom 2. It's pretty damn unbalanced. Characters like Ryu, Akuma and most Capcom characters are shit in comparison to Marvel characters. Honestly, I can say that it's damn near impossible to win using a low tier team.
But still, tetting a low tier character isn't an excuse. If you're any type of decent player, you can still do at least decent with a low tier character, if not actually good. It's not like you're playing against the best in the business. I've never given a shit about tiers. I like playing whatever characters, even if it makes the game slightly harder.
puns a side, i generally like looking at tier lists to see where my favorite character stand on popularity and competitive strategy.
then their are those who take the tier list to seriously and complain about match ups and character attributes and them people are bitches. its all about predictability
Yeah, I bitch about Tiers sometimes, but I'm just joking with my bro when I do that. The better player wins, so if you hear someone saying "x character is x tier, so that wasn't fare. etc. etc." Especially if you're playing with friends, tell him to suck it up. Just cause he was good with a certain character and completely gets wrecked by another character, regardless of tiers, shows that he's just a horrible player.
I have so many examples to list. Smash bros, I play with Link, Sonic, and Ike, all considered bottom tier and I kick ass with them. In Melee I played mostly Link and also owned my friends with him, again, he was low tier. It's all about player skill and how well you know the character and play.
tl;dr Don't use tiers as an excuse for your lack of skill. If he ever mentions tiers, just follow the instructions in this video.
Tier are for tournaments and usually is a measure for how well a character in a fighting game controls the field, also how well they can combo and stuff...
Ex. Rachel in BB CT was high tier cause she had great mobility and zoning with really good combo ability
i should also note that Tiers don't make or break the game since a low tier character can decimate a high tier character if the high tier player messes up or preforms poorly.
Tiers are just a way of saying "it is harder to win with this char than another", nothing else than an excuse for saying that you suck imo. Ganondorf is slow and hard to play with, rely much on timing the punches, but it's not like it's impossible to win against a "higher tier" character if you are good with him.

My brother... LOVES FALCO AND MARTH.
Ugh, it pisses me off when he uses Marth and stands there with his counter thing going the entire battle.
Tiers are stupid.
Marth's counter is epic and awesomely fun to play with, but if he just spams it all the time you should be able to figure out a few ways to counter it on your own, not that hard.
For competition play, I guess tiers are important, but I mostly just see them as the mark of an unbalanced game. Not to say imbalance is always bad, but in an ideal competitive game, shouldn't it be difficult to separate the characters based on being generally, all-around stronger or weaker than other characters?
In any case, using tiers as an excuse for losing is a cop-out, pure and simple. Getting a "low-tier" character is a chance you take when you pick random.
Ganon can be brilliant if you use him right, unless you're up against a team of maybe Sonic, Kirby and Zelda. :P
Tbh, the only 'tiering' that I might employ is that of 'noob chars' like Pikachu (thunder spam) or Ike (sword spin). My mates are all pretty amazing at Brawl and slightly better than me, but while everyone has their favourite characters, we all switch to underused characters like Game & Watch or Ice Climbers every once in a while. It presents a fun challenge, you don't look bad when you lose, and every character does seriously have its good points, so it can be fun to work your way into a character and start playing well with them. Mario, however, can fuck right off.
As everyone else is saying, Tiers are pretty important, but where the character actually places isn't what's important. It's the MATCH UPS that character has against other certain characters.
If a character has good matchups against nearly everyone, that character is considered high tier. If they have very bad matchups against everyone, they're low tier. If they're even, they are mid tier.
An example from SSFIV, C. Viper is considered a lower tier character by the Japanese. However, she does very well against a high tier character like Chun Li. While tiers are to be considered, what should be is the MATCH UPS.
Still, Ganondorf is the bottom tier because he's just too slow. Your skills do matter a lot, but if both players are of equal skill, Ganondorf would lose to just about every other character 9/10 times. Skill can only get you so far.
Also... Any real sport would never complain about their character, especially if it's random.
I wrote too much. x.x
Edit: In Pokemon, tiers actually matter. It's harder to beat a Mewtwo of the top tier with say a Donphan who's in the lower tiers. That's why games are played at a certain tier to make things fair. You can't use a Pokemon of a certain tier or higher depending on which level you want to play at.
