An idea for a roleplay

Okay, I have this idea for a roleplay. The premise is that a famous martial artist is hosting a tournament in order to find promising students. As such, the players would fight against each other in single matches and the ones the martial artist picks will recieve special training from him in a remote location

Battle RPs have been done, but don't usually last long because of a lack of plot and premises. They're usually a bad idea because people don't normally want their character to lose or die. They're not necessarily useless if you only intend on people posting in order to practice writing fight scenes, though.

That is true. I was thinking more in terms of people simply losing if they lost a fight, nothing extreme as the premise is for the martial arts master to find students.

Well, that much I'm still working it out. Here's what I have so far:

Around the world there is a mysterious and very powerful martial artist. He is known by many names, all of which translate to 'The Black Dragon'. Several people will have received a special invitation to a remote mountain temple to participate in a martial arts tournament and it's said the winner will be taken as Black Dragon's personal protege.

I just had a thought to perhaps break this up into a few events besides straight up fighting... Sort of like the tournament Genkai held in Yu Yu Hakkusho

On topic: This definitely needs more work. And something beyond the tournament needs to be set up, I mean; you have a tournament going on at this. But after that, what's next? This just seems too bland and plain. Add more complexion, lore and all of that, for which it basically comes down to what NeoStriker said. v_v

Do you have any suggestions? So far I just have this premise, this was a recent idea I had

I could provide some, but before that. Do tell if this has anything supernatural or is 100% realistic without anything that's impossible to do IRL.

I want to give a more fantastic feel but still use some more realistic martial arts. I feel like it would make it more fun since it would give more options to the players. I will however keep watch so stuff like god-modding would be taken as in-character cheating the offender would be removed from the competition

Add daughters. Add a mysterious girl who emanates an aura as if detached from the world. Add a rival to that Black Dragon fellow. Add a group that hates the Black Dragon fellow. Add a guy/group that tries to make a profit off of this whole thing. Mountaintop, forest, pandas, bears, lions, jaguars, tigers, eagles, clouds, springs, spirits, temples, statues, sculptures, dragons. Think of ideas that could resolve current conflicts of the possible characters (people love starting their characters out with some issue) or ways that could create new conflicts for the possible characters. MORE, MORE, MORE.

That's a lot to ask at the beginning of the whole thing

Easier said that done. You may want to find a better solution to stop cheating and god-modding. Because who's to say that you'll get a lot of players to begin with? There may be a lack of interest or high interest, or it could be just medium. We don't know yet. But you may not want to kick players out of your RP and kill it for good. Just teach them, help them go the right path, explain if they do the wrong thing and do god-modding. If they don't listen, then you may think about kicking them out.

Anyway, suggestions:

- How about having another tournament on which the martial art's master's rival (make things up for this lol) hosts after the first tournament? On that tournament, the students of "The Black Master" fights against the students of his rival?

- I don't know what else can be done, but make sure you have something set up in mind from the start and give hints of it on the first tournament and go on with them on the game, make it obvious that shit's about to happen after the tournament (that would excite the players. maybe), and I don't mean super hard training from the Master when I say that.

I say add clans of diffrent families, just a thought

Hm, well this is something I'll have to develop over time since I was planning things to be a bit more simplistic.

In the meantime I have another roleplaying idea that's a bit simpler. It's something I was part of on the escapist, but I decided to leave because a lot of noobs started to mess with the formula too much- I'll admit I'd bended the rules too for a time but eventually stopped.

In that roleplay, players would take the role of their avatar and would go on an open adventure whose events were determined by the input of each player: Basically everyone had a say in what happened in the roleplay's story, however no one person was allowed to control the story on their own and godmodding was not allowed. It was somewhat successful as many of the players had come up or used very interesting characters and transversed many places and there were a lot of great moments.

For what I was planning for fakku, people would also use their avatar, but were allowed to change their character (since people occasionally changed their avatar) however upon the first post this new character appeared, the player would need to provide a new character sheet so people know who (or what) this new character is and what they're like.

While the story would be open-ended, I would give the plot a light nudge every now and again towards certain directions as I do have some ideas for events in mind.

Also, I wanted to allow people who claimed waifu to be able to include them in the roleplay, but they would be treated more as supporting characters.

What do you guys think of this?

I dislike this idea where you think it's good to let the RPers create the world themselves. What they should be doing is discovering the world, not creating it.

I agree, since the problem of people godmodding and not wanting to lose poses as a big problem. Mayb you should get another person to help you build up the rp. :l

Agreed. Can you trust that the RPers will create a world better than what you'll create? Most probably not. It's your responsibility to create the world of your RP and have the RPers discover it.

Well, that's probably what caused the last one to be derailed in the first place. I dunno, there's just some stuff I wanted to try out, but I can't quite find the right medium to do it since either there's not enough people to be active or there's too many idiots around that forum.

I'll have to tweak this one too, but at the moment I don't have any ideas
