Fakku e-zine

My 'idea' is to create an e-zine of sorts, a monthly or bi-monthly mix of creative content, broad anime/hentai news and the pick of forum topics over the period. I would want it not just to be genre-focused news but to have a real basis in the forum community, something to highlight threads people might have missed, and also to present a positive image which would entice people into joining. It shouldn't be embroiled in forum politics, but emphasise creativity and the interesting stuff that happens, and with any luck, involve numerous users at all levels. To that effect:

• [*]Reviews - anime (either one person, or take short opinions from the anime threads to form a consensus), recent doujins or video releases, VNs. Likewise maybe a recommended anime you might have missed etc.
  
  [*]Articles - state of the industries, Sindalf/other TL group rants and insider stuff, why I love/hate X, whatever really. Up to individuals contributors.
  
  [*]Staff interviews, quotes
  
  [*]Big site news, forum game and competition reminders/summaries (to complement existing front page posts)
  
  [*]'The best' of certain forums, as chosen by a senior user who frequents them. A piece of artwork from Art & Graphics, a story etc. from Writing, a culinary creation from Food & Cooking...
  
  [*]Maybe a list of users who have joined/left in the period, major posting milestones and summary of users efforts (drawn from Wikia project)
  
  [*]Retro section - an old character, series etc. with description, DL links, some opinions from forum fans
  
  [*]Maybe a tongue-in-cheek, retrospective article on the last month in IB
  
  [*]Maybe a pick of IRC conversations or general amusing quotes, could also apply to forums

Design-wise, I was thinking about a full-page magazine style document, but readable via the on-site manga reader, so basically uploading it under Ecchi or whatever and letting people comment on it like any normal doujin. The ultimate aim would be to have it as a regular fixture on the front page. But that all depends on people's readiness to contribute...and whether we can find the software, expertise and the time to put it all together. :p

I'm liking the idea, dos. A few questions come to mind though.

†¢ Who will design this e-zine? If you have the design know-how, then this isn't a problem.

†¢ Will the sections in each edition be constant? Because forum-related articles run the risk of running out of fresh material in the long run. Also, is everyone eligible to contibute?

†¢ Do you plan on doing this yourself, or would you assemble a team? An editorial staff, of sorts.

I need to look into how to construct it. I'm pretty meticulous and have a lot of time on my hands, so I'm sure I can put something half-decent together myself if needs be, just by looking at actual magazines (and having worked on my old school magazine :P). But I may look to arty people and those with specific software knowledge to assist. It will have a Fakku theme, everything else is positioning and making it look fancy. I would preview it or send it to people to be criticised.

I imagine most sections being consistent, but I think I've suggested enough already that things could be rotated. It won't be that regular though and can't be too long, or people won't read it when they've probably just come to look at porn anyway.

A team of regulars is the aim, but we will be reliant on more than their number in random/irregular contributors. But I don't think I can organise and create the whole thing by myself, no. Maybe a test issue with two or three articles and stuff I know about, if absolutely necessary.

I think it sounds like a great idea, assuming a few kinks could be worked out. First and foremost, the problem arises of having any actual sustenance to the articles (or at least the forum based article ideas that you pitched). This is a hentai site, not a meeting place for the best in intellectual minds, so writing something with actual meaning poses a bit of a challenge.

The second big problem is getting people to read it. Assuming we can get Jacob's (or other major admin's) approval/backing this is a moot point, but the writing section isn't exactly a major hub, so we'd need to go about spreading it somehow.

Actually, I guess those are the only big two problems that present themselves at the moment, though I'm sure there will be some speed bumps.


Pessimism aside, I'd love to help out in some way, though I'm not much good at drawing an audience. I'm happy to work as an editor though, seeing as how that's one of the few useful skills I have to offer.

Keen idea bringing it to the section that is actually logical to approach in order to find people to write articles beyond blog/txt style. Then again, they would be in comparison to the articles in Playboy which, as the rumor goes, people read it for.

Nice idea, but it will only live on people's generosity to make it so. Be prepared or face struggles.

Where to post this thread was actually a bit of a dilemma. I wanted the writers' criticism first, and I'd like this forum to be a base to work out of, but yes, it does still lack the traffic to kick-start things. I'll probably funnel a few more people in here to discuss it, then work on something tangible to show people, and get this moved to Random (for a while at least). From there I'd hope to get enough people and know-how on board to produce something, which we could then pitch to Jacob and Mike.

I don't think it needs to be a gathering place for great intellectual minds in order to produce content. I think we have enough people who could vent and present their thoughts coherently for a couple of articles, and much of the rest can - as suggested - be gleaned from existing discussions to present opinions and the true face of the forums. It needs to reflect the actual users we have here, so I wouldn't want all of the content to be thought provoking and full of substance. It needs to present the intellectual and the trivial sides of the community in order to attract all types.

I think this is a great idea - + rep and all that.

I cant come with any help or advice, but Id definitely read it.

Question; who's going to be the ones writing the articles?

Whoever is interested. I'd probably approach a few people initially, and after that just ask for contributions and hope for the best. But like I say, anything of sufficient length will be welcome. I want everyone to feel like they can write something and have it in there; the e-zine needs to represent the whole forums. And I'm sure I could write a few too.

Does sound pretty cool, maybe you can include a "Fakku Administrator/Moderator mailbox". I think you should try to find one person for each section as well as a couple of other contributors. That probably sounds like common sense, so don't mind me >_> Ooh, please convince Rbz to write, he's awesome.

Not everyone who wants to write each time will get to. I'd open it up to all relevant contributions, but people would have to summarise their piece before they submitted it. I don't want people to spend loads of time on something we won't use. There will have to be quality checking and advise on how the person can edit it or bulk it out, but I don't think that would be too much trouble next to everything else.



Like a staff Q&A? That could be cool. It would integrate the Formspring and video stuff that Jacob has tried in the past. It can just be difficult with him travelling so much.

I was thinking of certain individuals for certain sections, but it's how much responsibility people are willing to take on (other people have lives). I'll have to see how it goes with regular contributors/editors. And I will certainly try to get Rbz in on it somewhere. ;)

Very true. I hope that putting it up in the e-reader like a normal doujin would make it easy to read, and front page advertising and big backing, as well as the comment stream underneath it, would get people reading.

Humour will be a strong consideration, but it would need to be good, and seem natural. Feels to me like you would need a proper editorial team working on it for a while to develop that. But there are users who could add a splash by nature.

Since it's going to be monthly, I suggest you add a section that solely focuses on recommending a couple of H manga / doujins and hentai videos. This is, after all, a hentai based website, and it'll definitely attract people to read it more.

..Although what I'm thinking about could easily be incorporated into the review section that you mentioned in your first post.

Like everyone said, good luck with this. It's ensured to be a big hit, but the road of making it will be difficult without people who are dedicated. If you ever deem me useful for some part of the e-zine, I'm always ready to help. (ﾟ∀ﾟ)

Yeah, a hentai recommendation section will happen, as long as I can find someone with the knowledge to furnish it. Not sure why I'd thought of anime recs. and hentai reviews, but not that! And thank you for the offer.

I'm currently downloading InDesign to mess about with, so I'll see if I can't knock something up over the next few days.

That looks like an incredibly epic prototype and the very fact that you're using InDesign is <3. This will be successful if it keeps like this. I hope this method is efficient and not too time consuming for you.
