= Chapter 3=
“Thanks Bill,” Klyde said as he threw his arms into the over coat presented to him.
“Don’t mention it,” the middle aged man replied as he took one last puff of his cigarette before tossing it over the wall. “It can get cold at night around here. Besides, you volunteered for watch right off the bat might as well be comfortable yeah?”
“Yeah, that’s a good way to think about it.” Standing at the top of the wall Klyde carefully peered downwards before looking out further.
“You’re partner, you don’t mind if we talk about her do you,” Bill asked cautiously as he curiously peeked over the edge, only to retreat in disgust.
“I don’t mind, but I’m not sure how she would take it.”
“Well um… just what is she…? Some kind of Monster…?” Klyde looked around as all the guard on watch turned to look at him. Suddenly feeling compelled, Klyde rubbed the back of his head.
“I don’t think that monsters really exist,” he answered. “At least I hope not,” he thought as he returned his gaze back outwards. “She says she’s a CORPSE, some kind of undead soldier.” Curiosity gave way to dread on the faces who all heard Klyde’s words.
“How can she be undead,” a woman gasped near the stairs to the wall.
“Guess you can say you are what you eat,” one of the guard snickered as he tilted his head while observing the subject.
“-Well in any case, Klyde can you get her to cover-up her body? We have children around and…well...” Bill shot a glance to the woman standing at the stairs and back at Klyde. She was around the same age as Bill with darker hair. “I’ll be fine Honey, go back down.” With a simple nod she quickly walked down and out of sight; Klyde took his chance to reply.
“Well to tell you the truth, I already tried to she just likes to be naked…”
“Hey heads up she’s coming up,” the guard who joked earlier warned in a laid back manner. Moments later Christy flew up into the air it seemed before she landed a top the wall. Immediately a sense of unease set in which she brushed off like the blood that covered her mouth.
“Well you don’t have to worry about any Mana finding its way back into those bodies,” she joked followed by a slight chuckle before setting her chainsaw onto the floor. “Doing alright Boy,” she asked giving him a quick glance before returning her attention to the moon.
“Just fine, how about you? You seem…cold.” Klyde very quickly found everyone on guard staring at him with rage-full embarrassment. Christy’s laugh nearly knocked them all off the edge of the wall.
“Fine, anyone have anything I can fit?” Christy’s grin seemed to reflect the moon in a tempting and sinister way.
“I’ve got something… well for now anyways,” Bill replied as he reached down to his feet and picked an old maroon colored extra tall sweater. Christy thrusted her arm outwards and Bill promptly tossed it to her underhand. Snatching it in mid-flight Christy slipped her arms into the sleeves quickly before she pulled it down quickly.
“Hey! What the hell,” she cried as she struggled to pull the sweater down over her body, her head well beyond the size needed to fit through. Klyde quickly covered his mouth as he tried to control his laughter. “Damn it, come help me BOY,” she demanded angrily. Making his way quickly to his companion Klyde grabbed on the bottom of her sweater and attempted to pull it down making sure his face was turned to the side and his eyes closed.
“Holy shit,” one of the guards exclaimed as they all started to laugh, finally at ease in her now comical presence. Bill and a few of the others moved in to help all the while laughing uncontrollably. Sensing them around her Christy growled behind closed teeth.
“This isn’t the open motel room special!” Coordinating their attack Klyde took the front as Bill backed off, letting another guard take his place as the boxed her in, each one holding a corner firmly.
“Alright we jump on three,” Klyde called out.
“JUMP?! What the HELL do you mean,” Christy Struggled even more to pull the sweater down herself from the notion; her hands clenching painfully on top of Klyde’s.
“THREE,” Klyde yelled as everyone jumped into the air, yanking downwards as they came back down.
Riiiiiiiiip! The laughter suddenly stopped as Christy’s big red eyes glared right at Klyde in the most hostile of ways.
“Start running.” In a flash Klyde took off down along the wall as fast as he possibly could while the others quickly gave her room. Restrained by her anger she waited a few moments more before she took off after him.
“THAT’S IT I DON’T CARE OF YOU TASTE LIKE SHIT! I’M BIGGER THAN YOU I WILL EAT YOUR SOUL BOY!”
“OH FUCK! GRIXIS PLEASE HELP ME,” Klyde screamed as he continued to sprint. Taking a look back he stared right into her glaring face. “OH SH-,” he started before he his speed caused his right foot to slam down on his left toes and causing him to fall forward. His heart nearly exploded form the pressure as he turned, just enough time to reach for Christy’s arm as he fell over the wall. Diving after him Christy clamped onto Klyde arm ever glaring at him still.
“HOW MANY TIMES ARE YOU GONING TO LEAVE ME HANGING,” he cried. Suddenly Klyde’s focus snapped to attention as a familiar sound entered into his ears. “Muffled cries…no wait, THOSE ARE MOANS,” he realized quickly as he looked down as Christy turned her attention forward as well. The streets were completely filled with zombies as far as they could see; as if the city itself were a city of the dead. Pulling Klyde back on top of the wall they both ran back to where everyone was still laughing. Watching Klyde frantically point down over the wall the guard whom openly joked dryly peered over in the indicated directon.
“No! Are you fucking KIDDING ME,” he yelled out as he suddenly took a knee, aiming his hunting rifle. His sudden out-burst caused the rest of the night watch to spring into action. Lining up along the walls edge they began to take shots at the ever growing zombie mass that pushed and banged against their wall.
“Bill start up the Evac, just in case,” the head guard called out as he slid his bolt forward and taking another shot.
“You got it Cid,” Bill replied as he hurried to the center of the wall and turned the old vintage hand crank air-strike warning. Within seconds more women and men with rifles ran up the stairs as others started coordinating the evacuation. Reaching everyone Christy quickly grabbed her chainsaw from the ground and let it roar to life high above everyone as more people began to line up on the wall.
“What’s the plan,” Klyde called out as he peered through his wide Holographic-Sight.
“Once everyone is evacuated we try to kill them all. At ANY sign of a breach we EVAC with everyone else.”
“Seems easy enough,” Klyde responded as he quickly began to take targets rapidly, far out classing any of the hunting rifles. He tried to steady his breathing as he placed the small red dot on top of one zombie at a time, being carefully to squeeze the trigger as his first trigger pulls sent his round to the right of his original target. A flash of light caught his eye and he quickly looked up. Some kind of ship hovered three hundred meters away on level with the wall.
“Christy what the hell is that,” Klyde asked as he continued to float in the air. “I haven’t seen a ship just FLOAT before… What the hell is going on…” Turning her head up to the ship and she began to laugh.
“Looks like they finally caught up with me; listen up try not to shoot us in the back alright? If that thing gets close just run.”
“If what gets close,” Cid question as he stared at the ship through his scope. Suddenly he watched closely as a Creamy white colored metallic figure dropped from the ship.
“That thing,” Christy replied. “DO NOT SHOT US SO HELP ME,” She growled as she lifted her chainsaw up in the ready position. Her statements made Klyde uneasy as he continued to drop his targets.
“What does she mean by…us…oh no,” his dreaded thoughts came true as he felt an arm wrap around his skinny body. “WAIT-,” he cried helplessly as Christy jumped off the wall. As he screamed Klyde managed to lift his rifle up, shooting at the zombies below them. Crushing the roof of a car Christy casually tossed Klyde back towards the wall as she quickly sliced through a wall of zombies. Quickly regaining himself Klyde fired at point blank range into numerous zombies around him before he drew the sword at his hip, slicing numerous zombies superficially.
“Aim through them Boy,” Christy laughed as she began to spin in circles forcing her lethal arcs ever outwards in a trail of blue Mana. Taking heed Klyde stepped inwards as he sliced, the very first one slicing through the rotted bodies of two in front of him. “That’s it Boy, that’s it! Stay close to the wall so they can’t get behind you!”
“There’s too many of them,” Klyde called out in terror as he sliced through several more as he got the hang of it. Three more came, then four then five as the everlasting wall seemed to close in on him. “CHRISTY-,” he began before his entire field of vision was cut off by a flash of light and intense heat. When he lowered his arms everything around him including the wall around him was charred completely save a five foot radius around him.
“Toss me your rifle Boy, I’m going to have a look at who it is they dropped.”
“Here, just be careful with it I’m useless without it.” Unslining his rifle from his shoulder Klyde tossed to her as she placed her Chainsaw on the ground.
“IF we survive I’m going to work on that with you.” Turning her back to him Christy chanted softly to herself before forcing her palms forward.
“Cid how the hell did this many just sneak up on us,” a woman sneered as she cycled her bolt.
“The hell should I know, just protect the wall and Klyde if you can.”
“What about that thing,” the same woman questioned with disgust.
“She’s dead already so assume she can take care of herself.” All along the wall the guards kept raining gun fire down onto the Zombies bellow. Round after round Cid kept a close eye on Klyde as he sliced through zombies that made it past Christy and his protective over watch. As he returned to aim around Klyde he found that his scope was blocked. Bringing his rifle up to wipe his scope the entire wall was doused with it; blood.
“What the fuck,” Cid yelled as he shielded his face from the heavy winds laced with blood. Feeling the crimsons moisture leaving the air he quickly wiped his face and took aim at the Metallic figure. Despite the previous sense of keeping his mouth closed it slowly hung downwards. 250 meters away he watched as the thing decimate the undead around it with eight long cables protruding from its back, each one producing a long and thin jet of Mana. Bright blue light and flashes of blood erupted all around it as it slowly glided closer towards the wall.
A blinding light caused everyone to shield their eyes; although it was a short lived flash the intensity of the brightness brought about daylight for a brief moment. Carefully removing his protective shield from his eyes Klyde lowered his arms and quickly scanned the area. Nothing stood alive and air held the burned death of hundreds of smoldering remains. As he looked up he could see Christy far ahead of him now by at least 100 feet.
“Damn it Christy,” he muttered to himself as the feeling of uselessness grew in him without his rifle. After a quick scan of the ground he locked onto her chainsaw and ran over. As he grabbed it he couldn’t help but feel amazed at the very deceiving light-weight. Getting up he quickly cautiously but quickly made his way towards her.
“So then, it’s the CORPSE Princess herself,” Christy belted as she struggled to control her laughter behind her grin.
“Verified, off-record prompted. I’m here to take you back, drop your weapon or I’ll be forced to re-kill you.”
“HAHA! Don’t make me laugh Cosima!” As Christy laughed the figure known as Mona reared her cables up into the air ready to strike.
“Without your CAGE you don’t stand a chance against me La-.”
Phew! Phew! Instantly Mona’s cables intercepted the rounds Christy fired at her; swatted away easily. “Shut up Princess, it time for the real world to catch up to you.” Christy quickly brought up the rifle to her shoulder and fired more rounds at Mona, each and every single round failing to strike home. She watched the cables rise and fired one last shot at her head before turning and running.
“Running will do you no good,” Mona called out before her cables stabbed forward, extending rapidly towards Christy. Looking behind her Christy fired a quick and well aimed shot, hitting one of the cables right at the edge before the blade and causing it to veer off. Quickly dropping to the ground and rolling Christy sprung back up, firing more round as the remaining cables collided with the wall with a most violent impact.
“FUCK! EVERYONE MOVE NOW,” Cid yelled as he felt the weight of his body transition on the floor beneath him. Pushing off with one leg into a leap Cid managed to land on the stairs and instantly began to fly down them as the wall began to crumble. “DON’T STOP! GET TO THE BOATS!”
“CHRISTY,” Klyde yelled at her as he finally caught up with her.
“You might want to run the other way Boy,” she replied as she quickly ran past him and towards the rubble that used to be the wall. Looking back Christy took a quick stance to fire more rounds at Mona who continued to glide slowly towards them. Taking heed to her warning Klyde sprinted as fast as he could as he carefully avoided rubble and bodies.
“Christy, wanna trade,” he called out between breaths as he climbed through the rubble and down the other side where she was waiting for him. With a quick nod Christy snatched her weapon from Klyde as she nearly punched Klyde’s Rifle into his chest.
“Listen carefully to me Boy, the thing that’s about to burst through the rubble is another CORPSE and is particularly dangerous in her CAGE. You have an Anti-Cage rifle so your rounds will kill her. Any open shots you take it understand?”
“Yeah, but what do you mea-,” he started as flashes of orange light rapidly sliced through the rubble until Mona glided through the smoke and dust. Klyde gulped hard as he stared through his Holographic sight, the red dot placed on her faceless head. He couldn’t help but feel in awe as if he were staring at something majestic like a marble statue but the lethality of it caused him to slowly back away.
“Young man you have nothing to worry about; I’m here for her, not you.” Her voice even through a hidden speaker of some kind was so graceful that Klyde found himself frozen in awe.
“You IDIOT, MOVE,” Christy called out to him. Snapping to his senses Klyde gritted his teeth and squeezed the trigger. The sound of metal impacting metal shook Klyde as he turned his back to run.
“I’m sorry but you can’t take her.” Klyde ran as he kept his rifle vaguely pointed at her, continuing to fire off rounds. Suddenly something wrapped around Klyde’s ankle and yanked his leg back. Falling face first in to ground Klyde was quickly dragged back and hoisted upside down in the air. Coming face to faceless he shook in terror as he quickly realized Mona had him in one of her cables.
“I’m not going to kill you, but realize I have to remove you from the situation for your own good.” Once again her hauntingly pleasant voice was hugely offseted by the giving situation and made no difference in calming Klyde.
“What are you going to do- WAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” Klyde screamed as he flailed his arms around having been tossed by Mona far into the air. He watched as he flew over Christy and the buildings that the town’s survivors had taken refuge in. He watched as a small fleet of yachts and boats came into sight with many of them already having casted off. “ARE YOU KIDDING-,” he began only to end with a painful splash into the frigid sea. Regaining himself under water Klyde made sure he had his rifle before he started to kick his legs until his head broke the surface.
“Oh Grixis, that was YOU KLYDE,” Cid yelled out from the only remaining boat in the docks. “Someone throw him a line already!” Bill came to the side of the ship in hurry as he twirled the knotted end in the air before tossing it over Klyde’s head.
“Grab it Klyde,” Bill called out as Klyde thrusted as much of his body forward out of the water in a sort of half leap. Grabbing the rope and pulling it tightly against his body the Cid, Bill and a few others pulled Klyde towards the boat where Cid reached down and grabbed him.
“Where’s Christy,” Klyde asked as Bill grabbed his other arm and the pair hoisted him onto the deck.
“Fighting that thing, we’re getting out of here,” Cid responded as he fired up the engine. “We were waiting as long as we could for you to make it here so now we’re leaving.”
“Wait, I’m not leaving without her!” Klyde quickly stood up, pointing his barrel downwards to let it drain of water.
“Klyde we’re not going to stay here and wait for a monster just to end up sinking by another one,” Bill replied. His words shook Klyde internally and his demeanor quickly changed. Running towards the dock he jumped over the edge and onto the pier and ran along it as his boots thudded hard against the wood. “Klyde, don’t do it!”
“Cast off already,” Klyde yelled back as he turned quickly, taking one long breath shortly before firing a carefully aimed shot, snapping the mooring line and causing the small boat to drift. Turning his attention back towards the fight Klyde watched as Mona stabbed repeatedly at Christy whom can only parry the blows with her chainsaw. Running towards them Klyde brought his rifle up to aim, watching his reticle swing back and forth over his target widely like a pendulum.
“You really are a pain in the ass after all,” he heard Christy growl as she struggled to push back the four of the Mana blades Mona pressed against her chainsaw. Klyde watched as the other four cables began to extend from behind her back.
Fuck! Klyde exhaled deeply and with it seemingly all the feel in his body. His head emptied suddenly deprived of any conscious thought. He could tell he was still running, but he couldn’t feel his legs kick off against the ground as his eyes played for his blank canvas the events unfolding in front of him. His red reticle continued to sway back and forth slower and slower until he watched it sat still squarely on the center of his target. He didn’t feel his finger slowly squeeze the trigger or heard the distinctive phew of his rifle. He watched as a large dent grow on the shoulder armor of his target as it began to slide sideways from the impact; it was only Mona’s innocent voice screaming in pain that brought him too.
“Watch it Boy,” Christy called out as she caught the stumbling Klyde in an arm and quickly helping him regain his footing. “You could have left with them Boy,” Christy remarked, quickly glancing over at him who stood in a text book low-ready, his body squared off to his target with the butt of his rifle pressed slightly into the bottom of his shoulder with the rifle pointed down at the ground.
“Hell if you didn’t eat me yet then I guess I can use the company of a naked seven foot tall woman.” Klyde shot Christy a glance and started to grin not in her usual way, but as if she were beaming deviously.
“Works for me Boy, remember what I said, take all open shots and try not to shoot me with that thing.”
“Just one question,” Klyde asked as he brought his rifle to a high ready, “there’s someone in there isn’t it?”
“She’s dead Klyde,” Christy answered as she took up a stance.
“Even so, I’m not going to kill her.” His statement caused Christy to raise a brow at him.
“So what are YOU going to do Boy? You can’t expect us to beat her WITHOUT killing a dead person do you? Please don’t make this into one of those mangas please.”
“Well I’m going to shoot at her and you’re going to help me tear those damn cables out.” Christy’s normal grin returned after a moment of shock, returning her focus at their adversary as she regained her composure.
“I’m sorry, but now you leave me no choice,” Mona called out towards Klyde, her voice slightly trembling. Without warning Mona dashed forward at lighting speed, causing Klyde to panic shot numerous time, each time swatted away by one of her cables.
“Oh no you don’t,” Christy yelled as she swung in a huge arc in front of Klyde. Struggling to slow down Mona skidded, bringing her cables in front of her in a instinctive cover-all block. The force of the collision with Christy’s swing caused Mona to slide backwards as Klyde fired repeatedly. His first few shots created dents in the cables but as he kept firing several began to spark and then broke off.
“Damn it no,” Mona cried as she realized what had happened. Quickly replacing her fallen cables with a few of the reserve ones she prepared to dash again.
Mana Generators detected above,” her HUD softly called out as arrows began to point upwards. Quickly looking up Mona watched as Christy dove right at her chainsaw first. Again she brought up her cables instinctively but this time Christy found her mark. Just above Mona’s blades she shoved down with her chainsaw in a thrust, cleaving two more cables and slicing into the other large shoulder-guard armor.
“You’re useless Mona, you always were and always will be,” Christy called out before she swung again, this time parried by one of only three remaining cables. Pushing off with her parry; Mona slid backwards to put space between her and Christy until she felt her left leg suddenly dig into the ground and causing her to spin around once.
Sever damage detected, left leg unit. Mobility reduced. Mona looked down at her left leg and right where her ankle was she could see a very large impact dent. Upon wiggling her foot she found to her terror that some of the metal had actually cut into her ankle and she screamed out again.
“Father, I can- I can’t do this! They’re too much for me,” she screamed inside her helmet.
“Hold on Mona I’m sending-.”
Klyde watched as Mona fell to the ground being thrown by the impact of Klyde’s shot. His insides almost evacuated out of his throat as his hands shook in terror. He watched as she laid there unmoving until he couldn’t hold it anymore. Running towards her he pushed his rifle by the butt over his shoulder and sprinted towards her. Sliding to her side Klyde looked at the metallic figure in front of him. On the side of her head he found the cause of his guilt; his round had severely crushed her helmet causing a large spider web like fractures across it.
“Wait Boy,” Christy yelled as she ran quickly towards him. “DON’T TAKE OFF HER HELMET!” His hands moving on their own Klyde found that the impact of his round had loosened her helmet and began to pull it off of her slowly. “NO!” As Klyde pulled it up he started to move it away from her face and promptly dropped it as he stared at her face with his mouth wide open. He hear Christy stop right behind him, but he couldn’t pay her an attention.
The face he looked it was so calm and serene that it continually sucked the breath out of him and locking his body. Her skin was very fair but not pale covering a very soft and delicate face highlighted by her long, silky and wavy light brown hair that seemed wet but was dry to the touch.
“What does she look like Boy,” Christy angrily muttered to Klyde’s surprise.
“You can’t see her,” Klyde responded as he shifted over to the side.
“Just answer me damn it.” Her coldness gripped on Klyde’s shoulders as he shook his head for a moment.
“She looks in short like a person of mixed decent. Her eyes seem to have that eastern curve to them along with her face but her skin is almost as light as yours. Her hair is long… kind of wavy and looks like it’s kind of wet but it’s dry to the touch.” Christy stared angrily at her face, gritting her teeth hard before she suddenly looked away.
“Shoot her now Boy, before she wakes up.”
“What? I can’t shoot her! She’s helpless right now.” Christy turned and glared at Klyde.
“You’re lying Boy. You can’t shoot her because you don’t want to!”
“Of course I don’t she’s-.”
“The most beautiful person you’ve ever seen I KNOW,” Christy growled as she fired up her chainsaw and marched over to the helpless body of Mona, rearing it up as her yell foretold her strike. She yanked downwards to strike but her arms couldn’t move as she glared angrily at Mona’s face. “It’s because of you bitch, I lost everything…” Christy slurred with a mixture of pure hatred and sadness. “FUCK YOU,” she finally yelled as she rapidly sliced at Mona before walking away.
“We’re taking her with us Boy, guess who’s carrying her useless body.”
