ZOMG! It's out! Here's chapter 2  It's twice as long so there's bound to be mistakes
Vision 2 (Side: Michael)
“Gift”
The sunlight snuck past the curtains and seared my eyes. My hand rose to fend off the sun that had come to warn me that it indeed was the beginning of another day. I turned my back on the sun in an effort to ignore the fact that the night had long gone. And there she slept, so peacefully, the one reason why my life had meaning. Still in a daze she opened her eyes.
“Good morning Michael…” she yawned. She began to stretch her beautiful body neatly hidden under the blanket.
“Good morning Anya,” I said as I carefully placed my lips on her hand to leave her a gentle kiss. She let out a light giggle. Gracefully she got off the bed and began to dress herself. As she did my eyes wandered around the bright room. As always her room was absurdly messy just like mine. Her dresser was decorated with a plethora of photos of the many memories we had shared together; some were happy while others were too embarrassing to mention.
“Aren’t going to get ready for school?” she asked as she gave me the look that said you’d better give me the answer I want.
However, today was different. I wanted to play around for a little longer so I coyly responded, “hmm… I don’t much feel like going to school today, I just wanna spend the day in bed with you.”
She gave off a furious blush. Then she proceeded to sit on the bed next to me. With her hand she slowly caressed my face. I felt that wave of content I would always feel whenever we were together, but that wave quickly turned into a hurricane. A hurricane of pain. She gave my cheek a swift pinch and began to pull.
In her most sadistic voice she slowly spoke, “Michael Sergei Borichenko, you will get ready for school this instant, do I make myself absolutely clear?”
I managed to let out a small whimper that was supposed to be “yes dear.”
As I began to dress I had began to remember the reason why I had spent the night at Anya’s house. Like most nights I had gotten into another argument with my father. My father was the head physician at Georgia General Hospital, and coming from a strict Russian household my father had set the bar so high that no matter how hard I tried it never seemed to be enough. In his eyes my ideals, dreams, and ambitions did not exist. For my father the only thing that mattered was me taking over his position when I came of age. To me it was as if he had become so blinded by his pride for me to become the perfect son that he had unknowingly relinquished his emotions for it. Unrecognized by him, my affections and ambitions lied with computer sciences. At an early age I had become infatuated in the quickly growing world of computers. Unfortunately, there were only two people who supported my dream; they were Anya and my best friend from school.
Luckily for us Anya’s parents had already left for work early in the morning so we were able to eat a makeshift breakfast in peace. After our meal we hastily made our way to school. At the front steps we gave each other our routine daily kiss and made our way to our respective classes. Although Anya was in the same grade as me we were disappointed to discover that we had no classes together for our graduating year, but we weren’t going to let that get in the way of our relationship.
My first class was a teacher’s aide class. I was to go help the computer sciences teacher, Mr. Chin, with the lesson. Before I could reach the classroom I made a brief visit to the restroom, for spending the night at Anya’s had probably left me in a disorderly appearance. I approached the mirror in an attempt to fix my unkempt wavy brown hair. After a few minutes of enraged finger-brushing I decided there was no more I could do and made my way to class.
“Good morning Mr. Chin,” I greeted to the teacher as I entered into the jungle of noisy underclassmen.
“Ah, good morning Mike,” Mr. Chin replied as he quickly wrote internet related chicken scratch on the blackboard, “could I ask you to distribute the hand outs while I finish with this?”
I gave a quick nod as I took the pile of paper from the diminutive Chinese man. After completing my assigned task I was allowed do whatever I pleased while Mr. Chin gave his lesson, my assistance would only be needed again after the lesson when the students would ask a barrage of questions. I took a seat in the corner of the classroom and took out my cellphone out of my pocket. As I was texting to Anya to ask where she wanted to eat lunch, the screen suddenly went blank.
“Great,” I muttered to myself. In an unexpected turn of luck my battery had died. As quietly as I could I left the classroom and made a mad dash to my locker. After a hectic search session I managed to locate my spare phone charger inside my densely packed locker. A relieved sigh escaped from me; at least my luck wasn’t as bad as I thought.
I returned to the classroom and attached my cellphone into the charger. Like most days the remaining class time passed by quickly and soon the school bell chimed signalling the start of our first break. The first break would only last fifteen minutes so I knew I had enough time to prepare myself for my next class.
I stood by my locker trying to find my textbook among all the clutter in my locker. My next class would be Advanced Biology, but it wouldn’t be so bad, because my best friend was in the same class as well. As I scoured my locker for the elusive textbook it came to my mind that I should send him a text message to see if I could just share his. Wait. Then it hit me, I had left my cellphone charging in the computer lab. I knew I had to retrieve it before my next class.
Just as I shut my locker door shrilling screams echoed down from the other end of the hall. At first I though some underclassmen were just fooling around but the screams didn’t stop, instead the screams got louder and much more frequent. Next thing I knew there was a wave of students heading towards the front entrance of the school, which unfortunately for me, was my direction. In order to avoid getting trampled over I ran with the screaming crowd and managed to make a hard right into the staircase. I climbed the stairs to the third floor. As I climbed the stairs the PA turned on instructing all students to evacuate the school grounds, but what I found odd was how frightened the voice sounded.
I had finally reached the computer lab. The lights were off and the door was slightly ajar. I entered slowly and looked around, the classroom was empty. As I walked towards the corner of the classroom I heard a light splash. I looked down at my feet only to discover I had stepped in a pool of blood. In shock I jumped back and looked around the floor for the source of blood. I felt my breakfast start to force itself out; I had found the source. There they were, on the floor blanketed by the shadows, two corpses of students mutilated and drenched in blood. I could tell by their uniform ties that they were in the same year as me.
I felt dizzy. I had no clue as to what was happening. Why were there mutilated students in the computer lab? An endless torrent of questions kept spinning around in my head. I tried to calm myself by taking deep breathes.
Anya…
I had forgotten about Anya. If these students were in this kind of situation then she could be in danger too. I ran to the corner of the classroom and retrieved my cellphone. Without delay turned it on and tapped as fast as I could onto the touch-screen to my inbox. There were two unread text messages.
The first one read: Mike where are you? What’s going on? I hope you’re safe! :(
The second one read: I just got home, I hope you’re alright. I’ll be at home waiting for you. Text me back when you get this!
Thank god. She was safe. My heart felt much lighter knowing that she was alright. Picking up my cellphone I texted her a message saying that I was safe and that I would stop by later. As pressed send the message there was a loud crash at the other end of the classroom. There was another presence in the room with me now. I thought that perhaps it was the same person who had killed those two students, with that in mind I searched around my area for a weapon to defend myself with. The only suitable object I could find was a meter stick.
I couldn’t help but think, great, just MY luck…
As silently as I could I advanced upon the other presence ready to strike. Hidden along the shadows I was now only about a meter off from where he was.
“It’s now or never,” was all I could murmur to myself. Taking one last breath I leapt out to strike.
“Mikey?!” A familiar voice stopped me in my tracks. I could recognize that voice from anywhere.
“JT?”
JT walked to me and gave me a tight hug.
“Mikey, you were alright,” JT looked relieved. I could tell his response from seeing me that something had happened.
“I’m glad you’re safe too,” I smiled, JT was my best friend, he was the only other person besides Anya to give me his unwavering support for my dreams.
I turned to the other person with us in the room. It was Hyozuki Chiba, JT’s other best friend.
“Sorry, Hyo, I didn’t mean to almost attack you,” I felt quite embarrassed.
“It’s okay Mike, I’m just glad to see that you’re okay,” Hyo gave me a cheery smile, but for some reason it seemed a little bit forced.
After the feeling of relief ebbed away I felt I needed some questions answered.
“Hey guys, what’s exactly going on? Why are they evacuating everyone?”
“I don’t know, but there’s something out there attacking people,” JT replied.
“Attacking people? You mean like maiming them and stuff?”
JT gave a quick nod.
“Maybe that’s what attacked those two guys over there,” I pointed to the corner where the two students laid.
Hyo gave me a curious look and asked, “what two guys?”
“You know, the two guys over ther…” I turned my head to see an empty pool of blood. The bodies were gone.
“What the fuck?” something was off, “they were laying there a moment ago.”
Hyo looked at JT, “JT, do you feel it too?”
JT gave another quick nod, “oh yeah, there are others in this room besides us.”
“JT, Mike, on the count of three make a run for the door, ok?”
JT and I gave Hyo a nod.
“Three.” My eyes shot to the exit.
“Two.” I felt my heart racing.
“ONE!” As we ran for the door two figures jumped out from the shadows. At first glance I knew they were the two students because they had the uniforms on, but aside from that I couldn’t even tell if they were human. Their faces were flesh covered, as if someone had skinned them or flipped them inside out.
“Mike, pass me the meter stick!”
I tossed the stick to Hyo. As soon as he caught it he readied his body in a stance form as if it were instinct. JT and I made it out the door, but Hyo was still inside. Then from inside the classroom came a loud cry and a snapping sound. Hyo ran out the door and shut it.
“Damn, these things are flimsy,” Hyo gave a sighed remark. The meter stick was now half its original size.
JT didn’t look pleased, “you can complain to the school later, but right now let’s concentrate getting the hell out of here.”
The three of us then ran towards the staircase to make our way down. However, it seemed our luck had officially run out. Below the staircase were hoards of students, skinned just like the one in the computer lab. When it seemed like things couldn’t get any worse, they did. The hoard had caught their eyes on us. They let out shrieking screams and started advancing towards us.
JT started to yell at us, “run run run run run run!”
And that’s exactly what we did. We ran. We ran as fast as we could.
I turned to JT, “what do we do now?”
JT shrugged at me, “how the hell should I know?”
Hyo turned towards us, “I think we should head up, towards the north building roof.”
With his eye brow raised, JT enquired, “why? Going up higher isn’t gonna get us out of the school.”
“Look outside,” Hyo pointed to the window, “there are groups of them outside the school building as well, it’s better to wait on roof †˜til help arrives.”
I peered out the window. Hyo was right; there were hoards of deformed people surrounding the school as well. Following Hyo’s plan we managed to make our way to the staircase that led to the rooftop, while at the same time avoiding several clusters of the creatures. We climbed to the stairs speedily and turned the knob of the door.
“It’s locked…” JT stated devoid of emotion.
I couldn’t believe it, we were going to die here. In desperation I started to bang on the door with all my might. I couldn’t die here. I had to return to Anya, who would protect her from these things if I’m dead? Tears began to stream down my face. Through the tears out the corner of my eye I saw that the creatures had caught up with us. They were now at the base of the stairs, with the same screams they began to climb the stairs.
Hyo gave a light disappointed chuckle, “so, this is how it ends, huh?”
I gave a chuckle as well. Hyo was right, this was the end for us. We were cornered, with nowhere to run. Just as I was about to give my final sigh a hand grabbed me from behind and forced me backwards. I heard a thunderous door slam shut.
“You guys should thank Eddie, he was the one who thought he heard voices,” the grease covered boy beamed. I recognized the blond haired boy, he was famous in the school for knowing everything there is to know about cars.
I got off the ground and looked around. We were on the roof now, and standing with the three of us were three other seniors. One of the faces was a very familiar one.
“Hey, you’re Edward Manson, right?” I asked the tall black boy, “you’re the school president.”
“That’s right,” Eddie smiled, “you’re Michael I believe, you’re in my Advanced Calculus class.”
JT swiftly interrupted, “hey fellas, we can play ice breakers later, right now what we have to figure out is how to get off this building.”
“Don’t you think we already know that faggot?” There was a tall Asian boy in a basketball uniform sitting on the ground.
JT gave him a sharp look, “what?”
“You heard me, faggot, stating the obvious isn’t gonna get us off this roof,” the boy said as he stood up.
“Alright douchefag, I don’t know what your problem is, but I was just trying to get everyone to work to together so we can figure something out.”
“Whatever fag, all I know is I’m not working with you,” And with that the boy sat back down.
JT let out an angry scoff, “jocks…”
After the unpleasant confrontation the group of us tried to create some sort of plan to escape from the school. It turned out not long after the other three had let us in the cellular signals had gone down. We had lost our only means of contacting the outside for help. The roof the barren as well, which also meant there was nothing we could use to signal for help. So with nothing to do but wait, we decided to introduce ourselves to the people we would most likely spend the night with.
“Hi, I’m Edward Manson, I’m Georgia High’s School President, nice to work with you all.”
“I’m Hyozuki Chiba, but you can call me Hyo if you want.”
“Nice you meet you all, I’m JT Choi.”
“Heya, I’m Alan Nimms, and I’m the school’s unofficial mechanic, and that guy over there is Eric Leung, he’s on our school’s basketball team or something.”
Lastly I gave my introduction, “Hi everyone, I’m Michael Borichenko.”
And with that came the silence. Silence, until rescue came. Little did I know, that the rescue that would come was not the rescue I was expecting.
There was a light thud. Everyone shot up and looked to the other side of the roof. A man wearing a hooded cloak had appeared out of nowhere.
“You boys,” the cloaked man spoke, “survived the school attack?”
Hyo gave the man a questionable look, “well, we’re not dead, so I’m going to say yes.”
“Perhaps you boys can help me then.”
Eric’s face contorted, “help you? Can’t you tell we’re the ones waiting for help?”
“And where did you even come from?” I had to ask the question that everybody had in their mind.
“All you have to know is that your city is in danger, and if this danger is not subdued then it will spread, and then the entire world will be at risk.”
JT calmly faced the hooded man, “are you talking about those creatures that are attacking everyone?”
“That’s right, and if they wound you, you WILL become one of them.”
“Holy shit, it’s like a freakin’ zombie movie or something,” Alan said in disbelief.
The events at the computer lab finally started making sense. Those two students must have been attacked just before I had arrived.
“I have the power to fend then off, however, I no longer have the power to save this city.”
Eddie gave a probing glance, “is that why you need our help?”
“That is correct, I have the ability to endow you all with great powers, but, at the same time it puts you in even greater danger than you are in now.”
Hyo still deep in thought asked, “Is this the only way to save our city?”
“Regrettably yes, this is the only option I have left, there is nothing more I can do for this city.”
The air was filled with tension and deep breathes.
“All I can ask you six now is, will you save your city?”
And with that he asked the final question that would be forever etched into my mind.
“Will you accept the powers of the Dreamwatchers?”
