Is that really true about Betamax? Bc I don't see how legally Sony could have prevented an adult-content provider to create a copy of the material and sell it in the Betamax format.

The only differences between Beta and VHS was audio and video. Betamax was Sony’s product, which had better audio and video. Only reason it failed was due to cost of units and tapes. Therefore, VHS won the war.
