Why was he surprised she was a virgin? They had been dating for a long time and hadn't had sex. Where else would she have lost her virginity? Unless the reports of sexual assault in Japan are as horrible as some say. Stories like underwear removed on a train and fingers inserted.

After a quick reread, you may have a point. His primary concerns before and after were her safety. In the moment he only says "You're..." it is unclear if he was going to say bleeding or a virgin. As I write this I am leaning toward bleeding. He showed great care for her and I think that fits his attitude better than my first read.

Yeah, that's a valid question. I'll just say about the reports of sexual assault in Japan, it's at the very least interesting to read about how high the level of conflicting reports I've heard about sexual assault/rape in Japan. Some say it's better than the West over there, some say it's pretty bad to where if you're a female foreigner, don't set a foot in the country if you don't want to be sexually compromised in a variety of ways. I tend to think it's more to the latter because when hear it's better than he West, they say it's virtually a nonexistent problem. I have a hard time believing that extreme.

Japan has something like a 99% conviction rate. Granted the defense works with the prosecution. And they won't charge a crime unless they are positive they will convict. And they torture you until you sign a confession. But if such upstanding people say there is no sexual assault happening, even though they separate men and women on trains, I see no reason not to believe them. Other than the ones I just listed. And the ones I didn't feel like writing.
