I’m not sold on Shougo being “reformed” tbh. Reading the last page at face value tells you he is but his personality tells me otherwise.
“If it hadn’t been for Fujieda-san vouching for him, he’d likely still be in the dog house.” That right there tells me Shougo would have done anything to prevent himself from becoming an outcast, including saying he loved Yua when it’s obvious he doesn’t. Not to mention he came inside Yua when she told him not to all the while thinking, “I need to pull out, but it’d feel pretty good if I didn’t, wouldn’t it?” He’s only thinking about his own interests.
“It’s almost like their feelings are mutual. Hmm, I sure hope so.” The fact the side characters are bringing up that notion of doubt should tell you something. And in the last panel, Shougo isn’t holding Yua’s hand, just letting it be held, which sums up the relationship IMO. He’s not into it; just there to keep his status.
The way he suddenly proclaims an epiphany at the moment she's about to dump him is a huge red flag too...it's very insincere. Honestly I was expecting the ending to be that he knocked her up and now they're stuck with each other as outcasts.
But I like the ambiguity...it feels very real, because in real life there's no inner monologue to tell us that he's a self interested scumbag without a doubt. We could only watch his actions and the words he says, and infer for ourselves his character from the front he shows us.
Very astute observations. Hentai jerks/creeps are overwhelmingly unrepentant and usually never see comeuppance of any kind so at least with this story there is at least some semblance of those elements for a change, which was refreshing. Hoping for the best with those two, but you're right, FMC should be on her guard a little.
I think it quite interesting to see all the comments here pretending to be high and mighty as if we all wouldn't have done what he did in his situation. Personally I see the class as being as complacently asinine as him, but maybe that's just my age and I don't understand how these kids behave anymore. Everyone involved in this story made me feel sad.
Quite the rollercoaster this story was, it's a shame hentai in anthologies are so limited by page number. I feel like the MC could've gotten a little more of his just desserts before "changing".
Hopefully we get a sequel to see if Shougo changed or he just played lip service so he can continue hitting that honey pot and keeping his status at school.
Another time, place and artist, this could have gotten really ugly. Luckily (for him), Shougo was able to correct himself and start treating Yua as more than merely a status object.
"Bad End" barely averted (this time) ... in the long-term, we hope so.
