I don't think vessel would work because the exposition was about the urban legend of human sacrifices. The ghost lady also mentioned needing to clear away the misfortune for the year, which is something a sacrifice would do. Besides sacrifice can also just mean giving something up for something greater, in this case, they were temporarily sacrificing their bodies and their free will to (I guess) clear away misfortune and also most likely get the girls pregnant with her ghost baby or something. Not gonna lie, Picao-sensei didn't really go into too much depth with this urban legend.
