I agree but I wish they didn't HAVE to fit it into a smaller time frame. They should space it out with more episodes. It isn't a movie so they should of taken their time - instead we are probably going to have the last 3 episodes be ran at a high level of drama in order to wrap up the ending.
Obviously I don't know how the internal workings of anime production work, but my guess is that the series is only thirteen episodes because it is fairly unprecedented in the fact that there is only a small (heard rather worthless) light novel and a 4-koma which so far hasn't amounted to much of anything. Most series come from a fairly broad visual novel, light novel or manga background.
It almost seems like the visual novel or manga world is a nice test bed for ideas. Almost everything anime related has a start there. Be fairly successful in that endeavor and you just might get yourself an animated series.
I guess what I'm trying to say is not even KEY is willing to bank on making Angel Beats! some huge, in-depth series when they have no idea of how the consumer will react.
Then again I could be totally wrong about that. *shrugs*
