Who's bright idea is it to mix comedy with a characters tragic past? Whoever decided it probably has an ice cream cone stuck in their brain.

I've got nothing wrong with Angel Beats starting off with a lot of comedy, but it puts us in a cheerful mood for the episode we're watching, then a character decides to talk how they met their end which is usually a very cruel one. The problem is for me personally I can barely give a toss since we barely know the character's and we've spent the last 4 episode's watching them dick around!

Like I said I have no problem with having some comedy in the series, but don't mix it in when we're discovering about a character's sad past, it makes it near impossible to even give a damn. I think it would've been better if Yuri's was left for later on in the series. But I'm assuming Otnashi's past shall be left till near the end, I only hope I'll be able to give a damn about it.

I don't hate this series, but all this "roller coaster" of emotions is killing the expectation.

currently watching this.. it's kinda misleading (an angel using twin blades and some nano-shifting capabilities.) but it's still great.

Just Finished ep1 until ep4.

Yeah this anime is quite dark themed i suppose. But nice op and ed though.
Definitely will keep watching.

Uh, you guys did watch Kanon, Clannad, maybe even Air right? Its a "Key" story - it would be weird if there WASN'T an equal mix of comedy and tragedy.

I watch and Play all Key games.....

it's not about the mix, It's how they mix it

in Kanon, Clannad, Air, they mix it slowly per episode, slowly building up the tragic story while maintaining the comedy part.

But just throwing in some "random" tragic story of one character to another without even getting to know the character for a while is just "bad mixing"

It's like throwing in some Tabasco sauce to my Ice cream while I'm eating it.

It can work if there's not too many characters, but this is just too much, and it's going to be "this week's tragic story" kind a thing.

I really can't feel sympathetic for that certain character, because of this.

I have seen all the other "Key" works and it is true that a mix of both is needed. But, it appears people were expecting less comedy, more story/drama. I for one don't mind, its still a good story in my eyes. Maybe, some ppl expected more, in light of the fact that this is Jun Maeda's work(story) and not the same as was in Kanon, Air, Clannad. If you want an example of Maeda's story writing ability, all I can recommend is a short manga he wrote back in his college days, Hibiki's Magic that he never finished, or at least nvr got an ending, only 2 volumes were released.

I agree with what you are saying though. Actually, the producer said they don't think they can tell the story properly in only 13 episodes (hrm... season 2???) so it is going to be as you said - tragic story of the week. The comedy is going to be there, but each character is going to have to get a turn to reveal there past.

The "key" type story of comedy, tragedy, then reconcilation that Jun Madea perfected that usually developes over the entire series is now given in spoonfuls containing all three components. However, thats what happens when you get a stupid 13 episode schedule.

The aforementioned series had twice the amount of episodes to tell the same type of story. Combine that with Madea's desire to throw action aspects into the story this time and the nature of the beast had to be changed. I doubt there is going to be a dominantly light-hearted or dominantly tragic episode save for the first and last episodes.

@Looking4Moar - If you want to see his writing ability, he wrote practically ALL of Clannad by himself.

I have to agree with you on this one but still its only the fourth episode and quite possibly Iwasawa's disappearance will become meaningful in the future. There are a number of possibilities I can think of for why Iwasawa disappears and why in the next episode he starts to catch on to the reason for why and intervened with Hinata. My guess is that this isn't the last that you will see of her. I haven't read the manga or light novel so you could be right and they are skimping on the depth that it offers but this is just my two cents. And even though there is a manga and light novel the anime doesn't have to follow it exactly and there may be a completely different story to be seen. We can only wait and see and we should feign judgement until its over with.

Manga is only the intial concept so they say. Which means that they plan to do the anime different as the manga was more of a "rough draft".

BTW, did you guys know there is manga about the making of Angel Beats? I doubt you'll find a scan of it online but I saw it in stores yesterday. There are like 2 of them out so far.....

Also like I said, I don't mind them having comedy in their story's. But in Clannad if during some of the most tragic moments they decided to add some slapstick humour before it then the series would be no where near as fantastic or popular as it is today.

I think the fact it's only 13 episode's may be it's problem, so they have been faced with a difficult task to bring out the same emotional roller coaster for us all. 24 episodes may of been a bit better but I'll continue watching this series to see how it all ends.

I do hope they deliver something powerful in the end.

OMG Kaimax that is a godly combination -.-, I can so see that being made into a mix or such in the future.

@koyori that idea wouldn't be half bad. It be nice to give respect to those that disappear. But I doubt the designers will want to redraw that same scene every single time someone disappears.

Lol, Illustrators doesn't need to re-draw, it's just a simple technique of Copy paste, using the same background, and the "characters" are placed on top of them individually lol.

and a simple editing to the main "character template" is easy.

and you do realize that they're already doing every OP differently with those small previews in the reff part of the song
