Anime/Manga that are special to you

Code Geass - The first season was epic with it's random plot twists and Keikaku Dori moments, and I felt very emotional near the end of the first season. The beginning of the second season was rather droll until around episode 8, after Zero makes his return. Then it was back to the same old random plot twists, but this time with a bit more emotional reactions.

I cried so hard when Lelouch died...


Pokemon: The Movie - The first pokemon movie (the one with Mewtwo) was pretty cool. Considering that I had watched quite a few episodes before hand, I had always thought the series was pretty wacky (Oh Team Rocket, you silly bandits you). The movie was totally different, especially when you're only 10. This was the first anime I cried to; starts when Ash gets turned to stone, and then it's like the god damn Niagara Falls when Pikachu started crying.


Ok, next we have Love Hina - This was the first Anime (i didn't know about manga's at the time) I watched from beginning to end. It was a very twisty story, with feelings ranging from sad and depressed to all warm and bubbly. It wasn't so much the childhood promise, but just the pure despair that Keitaro feels almost every episode. I really felt complete when he got Naru in the end.


Then, there was Code Lyoko, which might not really be considered anime as it comes from France, but it was drawn in an anime like style, and I thought it was a pretty good watch.

Seto no Hanayome - In all honesty, I was actually a bit disappointed when watching this series. The beginning started out okay, and I was really expecting a sort of revelation of true love between Sun and Nagasumi. However the two hardly even spend that much time together throughout the series, and the ending was also a big time disappointment. After all that action, after all the emotion, after Nagasumi almost dies from all that merman magic. After all that, they don't even kiss.

I WAS SO RAGE OVER THAT. I had watched the series expecting a very engaging tale of love and jealousy, but instead got a joke book and a strong lack of voiced feelings. But, if you looked at the characters themselves in a standalone kind of way, it was an okay series to watch.

Elfen Lied - The first anime I watched that was more mature than most others I had seen before. It had a hell of a beginning and only a few episodes were kind of dry (pretty much the first few episodes after Ep. 1) The story line between Lucy and Kohta was heart wrenching. Having only seen the anime (with no intention of reading the manga(I've heard it gets really stupid)) I can honestly say that this was a very engaging and emotional watch, and I suggest that if you haven't seen it, you should give it a try.



So basically, I like any anime that makes you feel empathy for the characters, that make you hope for the best for a certain character and feel such sadness when bad things happen to them (especially for what seems to be no reason.) Any anime that makes me cry is worth watching

That being said, I have never watch Cowboy Bebop, so sue me.

@oneshott: You expected Seto no Hanayome to be a serious romantic tale? Really? It had RomCom written all over it.

Anime or mangas..my childhood and teen period are filled with mangas..

Dragon Ball&Doraemon (Manga)
My first manga series , I didnt bought from first volumes or anything, I just got various broken parts of it. Volume 10-11-12, then 18-26 etc, my childhood is full of it. Yet my mom thrown all of it away.

Samurai Deeper Kyo (Manga)
The very first series of manga I had to read them all. Started reading them at 13 years i think. I liked it alot, followed the series for years, but was quite dissapointed for the last volume.

Air Gear & Get Backers (Manga)
The series of manga I go into deep thought on, I think about it all the time and when a new volume comes out, I purchase it immediately. I remember always going to the store nearby on the way to tuision, checking if any new release.

Clannad, After story (Anime)
I finished the VN, when Clannad anime came out, I watched it and loved it once again, never thought that an anime could be this good at adapting the VN and making me cry just like the VN even though I read it firsthand.

Eden: What a wonderful world!

It was THE only manga that I could ever think of that had an epic story by family generation jumps, questioned the ideals of life, questionable human tragedy, AND THE ONLY ONE TO INCLUDE GNOSTIC MYTHOLOGY.
Hiroki Endo's art and detail is as great (if not even greater) than Shirow Masamune's Ghost in the Shell manga imo. An old manga series that should recieve great praise, but was rather under the weather.

Ohikkoshi

A manga by manga-ka Hiroaki Samura, creator of Blade of the Immortal. This manga captured my heart with its short romance comedies. A really nice manga despite its shortcomings and being a oneshot collection.

Berserk

I'd like to say this manga is the grandaddy of all action manga that defines swordsmen. Perfectly obvious why this manga is special to me. Kentaro Miura is fantastic for creating such a work.

Planetes and Vinland Saga

Both made by Makoto Yukimura.
I loved how Planetes looked into the life of person in space, hypothesizing how humans would live in space in a probable future. How the characters are orbital cleaners preventing as much free roaming debris from creating a disastrous Kessler Syndrome (go wiki it haha).
Vinland Saga is somewhat special to me due to the fact that most manga use Norwegian Mythology alot for storylines, but didn't make a single manga about vikings, until I found this manga. And the rather interesting part is that it takes place in the period when Canute the Great rose to power, a man who once said, along the lines, the sea will stop if I command it.

GUNMN AKA Battle Angel Alita

One of the few female protagonist I consider to be great in anime. Also one of the oldest known manga I know from a time. This series definitely holds a great place in my heart, along with seeing the earliest AMV's in 2001. And the side notes in this manga also hold some info to make you look smart haha.

If I could, I would put Fate/stay night, but then thats a VN >.<.

Kara no Kyoukai

In it's OVA form. Stole my heart with beautiful animation and weird storyline.
7 movies titled. Epic when watched on the japanese big screen. Best animation by infolible.

Through my entire childhood memories these are the only ones I will always remember and find anwser to many of life's problems

Dragon Ball Z- When I was a kid I would usually sit down in the living room grab a stack of blank A4 paper and just draw things I see on TV. And back then Dragon Ball was the only thing that blew my mind all these years. Its my first anime and my first actual time seeing something like Super Saiyan. It completely blew my mind and is still one of the leading action packer.

Gundam- I don't have an actual preferred gundam series but if I was to choose I would say the original and G Gundam. Again Gundam was my first experience with robots and it was awesome to see something like that on television.

Code Geass- Now alot of people have already highlighted the essence of Code Geass but surely in my opinion the first one I actually watched that featured the use of tactics and an antagonist as the hero.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Getter Robo Armageddon- Two of my opinion the most over the top epics in mecha series. I have no problems with Getter due to the fact that it grew up with me and also introduced to me the idea of GATTAI. Tengen Toppa just went fuck you to the genre and completely burnt every mecha anime in the industry to the ground. I mean if I was to recommend a good mecha anime I cannot stress TTGL enough.

Evangelion- And for good reason. It's the only anime that I actually felt ripped off after watching it. Sure, many will say that its a great anime but whenver someone tells me all the good points about the whole thing I will retaliate with a very simple argument "the director took a shit on 20 something episodes of gold and replaced it with psychological mindfuck" picture going out of the cinema looking dazed and shocked at how acid tripping it is to watch end of evangelion when it is simply a collage of fancy images wrapped into one. D:

Anime:

Yuyu Hakusho - The anime that got me into animu. It's called Ghost Fighter here. lol

Clannad (& After Story) - I have watched it for many times already but I still cry.

Firstly an anime that will always be special to me is Pokemon and its first movie. Something about Pokemon back then really had me hooked. The friendship and love Ash built with those around him and his Pokemon touched my little heart. And...

Another anime that special to me is Vandread. Well this anime wasn't special on an emotional level. But what it did was introduce me to the more sexual side of Anime. Sure it was nice and I really liked how Hibiki always got himself into awkward situations with the countless women around him. And with all ecchi it was bound to lead me straight to hentai...

Now the anime that introduced me to the Shounen genre, Rave Master. Man what can I say about it....
It works like any old Shounen anime, you know save the world because you got the power. I was disappointed that they didn't continue it after episode 50-ish.

Then there's Welcome to the NHK(Manga). I was bored one day at a book store and figured I'd try something new rather than buying another volume or Negima!. Browsed around and this Manga caught my eye. Reading the cover it talks all about the NHK conspiracy and I really didn't know what to expect. Went ahead and bought it and when I read it, I felt like my eyes had just opened to a whole new world. It was definitely something I've never read before and it was very amusing and at times heart-wrenching. But nonetheless I loved it for that.

And finally there's Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Really... I'm not man enough to actually begin to describe how mind-blowing this anime is. The last battle had me shivering in complete awe from the raw amount of epic is dished out.

I don't know about the Rom-part but the Com-part sure was overrated. Else, the series had its moments; that's as much as I could say about it, really.

PS: I just so recalled Nagasarete Airantou, a 07 batch mate, which in my opinion did considerably better (and consistently) in both romantic and comedic aspects in comparison. This anime, however, is by no means special to me in any way.

I would say its Gundam Seed Destiny

Also, there's Eden's Bowy (Eden's Boy). I'm betting none of you know about this one, since it wasn't even popular, so i'm not gonna bother to explain this awesome, oldie-but-goodie anime

Anime as a whole

Dragonball Z. It was the first anime I ever watched. I'll never forget my more innocent days coming home from school and watching toonami. Good times...

Pokemon. Great games growing up and it was a useful lesson in the elements. Water extinguishes fire, water conducts electricity, and bio-engineered felines will destroy the world.

Elfen Lied. Humans experimenting on and fearing whatever is different from them. Amidst all the gore, blood, and hatred was a small haven of lost, wandering souls that found comfort and love in each other. Mayu's episode and Lucy's childhood (the dog murder especially) were incredible episodes.

An arc or episode from an anime

Clannad - After Story. The episode where Tomoya makes peace with his father. Just really hit home the father-son relationship. Outwardly apathetic with each other, but deep respect and affection inside.

ef - melodies. Being a fan of hentai; I'd read several doujins where a woman was raped and she ended up enjoying it or initially enjoyed or even asked for it. It got to the point where I got desensitized to it. Episode six brought me back to reality. Yuuko and Himura at the church for the last 15 minutes of the episode is in my opinion the greatest scene in anime.

Manga: Naruto. Kakashi Gaiden. Rivals who respect each other, bring out the best in each other, and would die for each other without question, caring for another more than themselves. I'd also throw in Jiraiya's death in this. The responsibility the elderly put on themselves to teach and protect the next generation to best prepare them to enter the world.

I saw this series awhile back on AXN. haha.

And since putforth with the manga series, much more people know it.

The manga I posted wasn't well known compared to the anime you just put haha.

My comment wasn't to attest to any level of quality (or lack thereof) in the series, but rather the surprise that someone can watch a series and totally miss the 'point'. Serious romance isn't likely in an anime about Yakuza mermen/mermaids with the Terminator in it.

For the record, I liked Seto no Hanayome a bit more than Nagasarete Airantou.

On topic, I just realized that DBZ also has a special place in my heart. After watching it, my experience had built up so that I could easily discern what anime/manga were crap.

Well I mean to say, I was at least expecting a little more romance than there was in the series. But yes, watching the Japanese Terminator and a man in a space suit was certainly entertaining. As well as the instant homolust / normal lust towards Masa was also amusing

Also, Fujishiro was great at the end.

Originally it WAS a false impression. I had no idea the thing was supposed to be a romantic comedy at first. I was of course quick to realize that it was, however I kept my hopes up, thinking I would get that one moment between Nagasumi and Sun that made it worth hoping for. Needless to say I was disappointed.




ANYWAY WHATEVER; point is the thing was funny but not as romantic as I hoped

Pokemon, Digimon and of course Dragonball/Z. Those are the ones i watched when i was little. :3
And Gantz, because it was my first anime after those 3.

Anime: Dragon Ball Z! - I still love watching that stuff!
Bible Black- First Hentai I watched.
Full Metal Panic! - The only Anime thing I OWN!

Manga:
Escaflowne - First series I actually finished reading.

Because quoting someone halves the total amount of effort which needed be exerted, and because quoting user_X doesn't necessarily equate to directing confrontation with user_X alone. As a matter fact, all I did was complement to your prior surprise, nothing (much) else; until it so suddenly came back to me how I, for the most part, was exasperated in watching it. I came so close to not ever wanting to finish it even, just so you know.

Well, since I don't really intend to deviate from the topic here, Romeo no Aoi Sora is one of the very few anime that I would truly consider dearly special to me.



EDIT: Of the recent, there is Cross Game...

Zettai Karen Children. Why? Because my first love is a chara from that anime, Sannomiya Shiho and I still love her until now
