This has been mentioned countless times, but it popped into my head again recently so I'm going to share it. Ignore/flame if you hate me, I don't care.
With all of the bans coming into place, anime and manga are slowly reaching death. Admit it.
You know what else is killing it? Piracy. Do any of you actually buy DVDs anymore?

Yes, they are. They're ridiculously expensive. But they sort of need to be. Sure, you can get them for much cheaper via other methods that don't actually pay the creators/company (Amazon Sellers, eBay, etc) but once in a while, does it really hurt to shell out $30-$40 to support something you love?

God damn it if this isn't true, but it's also a matter of opinion of what's "good." Will KissxSis or Oreimo ever reach American shores? Fuck no, because the country's so much of a fucking pussy when it comes to taboo that they'd rather stop it entirely. Don't want little Billy finding something that has a girl kissing her brother with tongue!

Opinion. There's always someone out there who likes it, and you shouldn't assume your opinion is better than anyone else's. It isn't. And a lot of anime isn't even dubbed these days, just subbed (Dokuro-chan, for example, is on DVD in the states, but it's just subbed.) If you hate dub voices, 99% of them have JP w/Sub options for you.

I still purchase Manga and DVD's, but I do it through Amazon.com rather than the local chain store. I get much better deals for the manga especially, and can usually get it dirt cheap (depending on the series I want and even cheaper for used items). As for the DVD's, same thing applies. I don't discriminate between sub and dub and sometimes listen to dubs as much as the original voices, but really not a problem which I choose. You can always switch audio streams to Japanese if the English is displeasing.

Anime comes from artists.
Artists make manga from artistic drive.
You're starting in the wrong field if you want to support anime. You don't support anime by making corporate control over art much bigger, you support it by helping the artists...

Most of my anime DVD and manga purchasing was done between early 2000 to about 2008, since then my cash flow isn't as good as it used to be, I was much better off back then, but now I don't have as much disposable income for anime and manga, but I try to save up, though last box set/collection I bought was maybe 2 months ago *still has a rather decent size collection from those good old days* Same goes for manga as well. My mind set now isn't buy because it look interesting, but buy because I already know I like it therefore will read/watch it over and over.

i buy all my anime and manga.... a few i have had to import (BRS, Kanon, Clannad) but fuck it im will to pay for summin i wanna watch that i cannot see anywhere else (yes england has to be the only country not airing anime at all)

The problem is the western license holder company rape the consumers and fail to pay the foreign companies their dues so they pull the right off the manga and anime leaving us with out a ending to some anime/manga or their crappy translation and prints sucks. Plus the long wait times are unbarring. Company like funanimation and others company putting a pay per view system in place is better then 29.95 per three eps of a anime. It true that i buy very little anime because it free but it because it free to view i sometimes buy a complete set of a anime.
I grew up in the time of dvd costing s shit load of my cash that i didn't have and the time when 56k modems and dial up was the only way on line.. i traded vhs tape sometimes in the dub sixth gen without subs on them... had to read a bad photocopied dot matrix printout.. and vcd(cd-r with mpg1 or 2 video.. very crappy but cheap as hell).
Also animetakeout is a netflicks like anime rental, with a manga rental system too.

1) A lot of commissioned subs are worse than fansubs, or at least not as well presented

I buy anime when I can. I try to support the industry whenever time allows it through character goods, DVDs, and Manga. I think most people do not buy anime because we grew up to it being "free." I am not saying it is right to download it for free, but I think that most fans today are a bit poisoned in our thinking to naturally assuming anime is free and there is nothing wrong with downloading it online. It does not help that SO many sites have it sitting right there for you with a download link in your face. Who wouldn't just download it?
There...are ways I think that could make it better I think. The music industry had this same problem too. Just think about iTunes, Amazon, and other Mp3 stores. Why do so many people shell out money for music all of a sudden? These companies make it easy and cheap. They give you a near endless library of songs to choose from, make it cheap, and seamless transactions. You never really notice how much you bought. The same could be said about smart phone apps.
My thinking is to take anime to the internet. It is already here just not in a good centralized location. Why couldn't Funimation host a media library and sell anime by the episode? Or even by the series? Steam does it to PC games, and Hulu and Netflix do it to movies and TV series. The only place that has anything like this is Crunchyroll and Funimation. It needs to be one big well advertised site for all of this stuff to go on. If it was large enough it would be a natural thing for all these companies (on the Japan side as well) to get it online for the fans instead of the hangs up with all the licensing bullshit

Here's my manga collection. Sorry about the poor quality image. Claymore is my favourite manga series, if you haven't read it then you should, it's one of the best I've ever read; I can't wait until the next volume. There's also some Miyazaki films at the bottom, along with the UK release of Lucky Star.

I would like to buy those DVDs but all the players on my country are marked region 3 and the DVDs sold in the U.S. are marked region 1 so it wont work, except if I watch it on my p.c. so I'm fine w/ downloading the shiny Blu Ray here on this site(but now I notice the anime download section is now missing, who the heck removed it again?).
Speaking of piracy, Doujins, for me are a form of piracy, or should I say the use characters in a self published work w/o the permission of the author/company who made the series(either anime or manga, it hurts whenever I use those words but some bastard shunned me whenever I use the word "cartoons"). I mean, they'll make a doujin, sell copies of it and will make make money in an instant; they did not even asked permission from whoever made it. I guess it's a different thing in Japan if they make it there, or even on any country since there are no laws being re-inforced or even implemented about it, but use characters from a book for your own profit and I suppose this is where lawsuits will come knocking to your door.

-Doujinka's, doesn't get many money from the sales, usually the money that they got is used to cover up all the expenses for their next doujin project. The start to "earn" money when they get popular and people will buy their doujins even though they're expensive.
-Nope, it's actually the same thing in Japan, it's just that they think it's not worth it to enforce it at this level. On the contrary, some of them think this a good publicity and advertising for them. There are certain rules and work ethics to keep things in-check.

I have to agree the Anime as a whole has drop considerable in the past 5 years. The main reason why is the internet with its bittorent sites and illegal downloads. I myself have been a advid anime junky for 15 years and have amassed a huge DVD/Blu-Ray collection over the years. Nowadays im ordering of sites like Animenation, Funimation websits and such. I use to buy them at chain stores like Best Buy, Sam Goody (god i miss that store), now im finding them hard to find cause their Anime section has rapidly shrank.
I'm so dissapointed that ADV Films had to break up into smaller independent sections but what can you do. So I continue to BUY, BUY, BUY i love anime and i dont want it to go aut like some kind of fad.

How about on the ero manga front.. aren't we stealing for the anthology companies and the artist on their works and tanks?
Doujin artist made like what 3-5 bucks on one of their doujin.. most sell like 15-40 of their book in that event... maybe they cut a deal with a bookstore or place to sell their remaining doujins at. The whole piracy thing is blown out to a unrealistic concept. most of the newbies are driven by torrents and fagsubs since they don't have the money or understanding to learn Nihongo.. true in now easy enough to rent a dvd or stream a ep from somewhere for a cheap price.. but still isn't getting something for free or at least a fair price something universal. i own a shit ton of dvd, vsh, laser. vcd.(yes i fucking a elder) some are animercan license dvd ect ect, but the japanese imports are crisper and cleaner.. fucking more money.. some what. I find some of the western redux and re dub anime to be ... sorely lacking in quality.. so i support crappy version or should i just torrent the subs or duals for free since i won't keep them in my hard drive for too long. if you find a good make anime then yes support them with the cheap 29.95 for the complete set or if it's fresh.. a hundo... it's way cheaper then the japanese version... i spend a grand in Akiba .. come out with a amount that i could account with my hands.
