I actually like the current average length for Anime series at 22-26 episodes. I would say my maximum is 50, like with Fullmetal Alchemist and Blood+. Any more than that and it becomes filer central (insert name of big Shonen Anime *HERE*)
Let me tell you something. The best writers and storytellers have a CLEAR idea in their heads what the beginning, climax, and the conclusion are from the start. They do this to keep a story from draging on too long, because inevitably the audience will loose intrest. For the most part because these unplanned parts have much weaker character development, and characters start acting out of character. And the much simpler fact that an unplanned story is going to be much weaker than a planned and thought out one. The skill I prize most in writers is the ability to END a story in timely manner, and to end it WELL, with all questions answered and loose ends tied up. That is why I think the current standard of 22-26 episodes is perfect, because it is very conducive to this kind of story planning.
If you can you tell your story in a 12-15 episode format (like Haruhi Suzumiya or Bakemonogatari) even better.
Shonen animes are epics, so they are supposed to be long. They are stories within stories within an overal story. Some of the most famous pieces of literature are epics, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh. A story should be as long as it needs to be in order to tell the story of the characters involved.
Plus, not ever author sets out with a set idea for a story - actually few do. There are some who even find themselves along for the ride, not really knowing how the story is going to turn out. They let the characters take over, School Rumble being a fine example. The story writes itself.
