Well, I’m not sure if you could call this an adaptation, as Gen Urobuchi was specifically asked by Shaft to make a story for them. They all worked together on the project.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica began development after Akiyuki Shinbo expressed his desire to work on a new magical girl series to producer Atsuhiro Iwakami while they were working on Hidamari Sketch and Bakemonogatari. During early planning stage, Iwakami decided to not adapt an existing work in order to give Shinbo more freedom in his direction style. He then contacted Gen Urobuchi to work on the project as a scriptwriter and Ume Aoki as a character designer.
The character designs, animation style, story, and everything else all contribute equally to the success of a series, IMO. I’m not sure the story would be as enjoyable if it took place at some generic school, in an unnamed generic city, with generic witches drawn in generic anime style. Seriously, the animation supports the story quite a bit more than one would think.
All true, but I guess I was just thinking more in terms of the scriptwriter; since it is writer (and often times director as well) that is overlooked. Even though the others are involved with art, animation, and character designs, it was more on who did the actually writing, but I see what you are getting at. Thanks for sharing that little snippet of information.
BTW: Madoka getting a novel by Nitroplus+? Hope this isn't a joke: http://animapple.blogspot.com/2011/03/madoka-mahou-shoujo-madokamagica-gets.html
