Here's some main character traits from mecha series that I remembered.

-Starts as "normal person" type in life.
-Or if he/she already in military or organization, he/she will starts as n00b who often made mistakes.
-Usually, if it's a 'super robot' type show, main character will be a hot-blooded type, and if it's a 'real robot' type show he/she will have cold and calm personality.
-Always ride the titular mecha, or awesome custom unit.
-Has 'devil luck' which make he/she survives any odds.
-Usually gets a rival which is stronger and more experienced than him/her.

Survive anything except a killing blow in the final episode/chapter.

It's okay for male main characters to brood, cry, experience angst over not being strong enough, refuse sex from the hot female main character, or have hair that would probably take hours to actually style without compromising their in-world manhood.
