Underrated anime

Like the topic states - name a show/movie that made a (at least) positive impression on you and yet feels deprived of the hype it rightly deserved. This can either mean having low votes/reviews across the boards or lacking advertisement to the point of being mythical.

This is something that often got me thinking while looking on titles I rated very highly in opposition to a mass opinion and I was hoping we could draw each other's attention to fine yet somewhat hidden stuff out there.

Shows that immediately cum to mind for me (will probably add more later) :

Kurozuka : Sweet visuals, sexy, awesome action, intriguing, Madhouse, ... an average vote of 6.3/10 on anidb. Say what !?

White Album : Measly average votes again and the attention/praise it got from hermitVI around here might just be it's biggest achievement thus far.

Tytania : Not the most popular genre I admit but a place around 700-800 in the popularity ratings of the more major sites while being one of the best of it's kind is a bit harsh IMHO.

Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto : Beautiful, subtle, hart-warming series that few seem to have heard about. And that's still a 10 times greater popularity compared to the second series that followed it more recently.


PS/ Getting a bit boring on the forums as of late so feel free to argue.

Well I've saw the all but the first one you mentioned, and of them all I enjoyed Tytania the most, I am not sure why, maybe just the great character development that you don't see a lot anymore, I consider seeing the one remaining, but prob not for a while thou nano desu

If I'd have to name my fav of the 4 it might just be Kurozuka. Still all (and many other) are very good IMHO and (even though rating systems on big sites suck dead gophers) deserve more attention/praise.

Good topic, but one that'll probably go unnoticed... as to why the "well thought out" topics garner a mere number of response while the "so-so" ones gets the attention of most users?! (I have no fuckin' idea)

For now, I've got nothing much to say... just that White Album, if not only for the huge let down regarding its animation around the latter half of its first season... I could proudly recommend it to everyone... but either way, anyone who knows how to appreciate a series (esp romantic true to life genres) could definitely see through the beauty that's inside and not only of what's visible in the naked eye. I may have a few issues with this anime myself but despite all that, I still managed to enjoy it a lot. And patiently anticipating its continuation that's set in October!

You know, the main idea of watching anime is that the viewers must learn how to adapt! And the most important thing that I believe most viewers don't have is patience... But hey, that's their own problem, not mine. I can understand that we each have our own taste and definitions of entertainment; some watch only for fuck's sake while there are others who take things too seriously. To each his own.

It's not the best series, but it's fun and a pretty good mystery series. I'm not really sure if it's underrated, but I never see people talk about the show at all. Even when it was airing, I only heard discussion of the series when it first came out.

Recently the only two series I saw that, I also saw get little attention were

Birdy: The Mighty Decode
&
Toshokan Sensou (Library War)

both which I highly enjoyed nano desu

@hermit : The reason for good shit being omitted might just be the same as for why we seem to have some issues with the forum activity as of late - people tend to get satisfied with somewhat more mindless entertainment. Not saying that it doesn't have it's place but it's kinda sad if you stop aiming higher.

@Shaggy : I took some notice in the series in the past but I believe some blog comments turned me off. It certainly seemed unique enough to be able to score a larger/dedicated fanbase.

@spalose : I must addmit that the term underrated is somewhat slippery. The basis for the titles I've mentioned was mostly the rough amount of interest here on Fakku and the scores/amount of scoring users on anidb.net and MAL.
As for the series you've mentioned - I've seen both and would indeed call them underrated. Still - I find Birdy vastly superior of the two with Toshokan being somewhat ... of a FMP ripoff with a silly story/premise. It does however have good production value.

A few that I think are totally underrated.

I don't agree with RahXephon here since the 50% of people who hated Eva wound up liking it. Not sure about Scrapped Princess, but I would agree that Planetes and Moribito are both underrated.

The series I think are underrated:
Gad Guard - Considering this and Vandread were among the first Gonzo productions I saw, imagine my surprise to see many people wind up bashing the company. In any case, my only problem with this anime is that it had a few minor loose ends that bothered me.

Inukami! - I'm serious here.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi - Though it is a "relative" of FLCL, it isn't brought up that much.

Martian Successor Nadesico - People are generally positive towards this one, but you just don't hear too many people mention it. Of course, it doesn't help that two video games that are part of the canon which tie up the loose ends were never localized into English.

I kind of want to put in Sora Kake Girl since I feel that, content-wise, it share many similarities to Nadesico, but I think it's just too new right now.

Not really underrated, but one many forget about is Outlaw Star. First show that got me into catgirls and space animu, this is a must see. Gene Starwind is manly as fuck, too.

Ah! The irony! I just started to watch Outlaw Star recently and I do have to say that I like it. I also agree that Tytania is wat underrated.

I think Gunparade is seriously underrated or nobody seems to know about it.

"Piano no Mori" (ピアノの森) immediately comes to mind.

MTNN - I've seen it a year ago, (since it's a MadHouse production and all)... mysteries never "sucked" at being solved; it was repetitive and damn predictable from start to finish. I would hate to mention Case Closed (Detective Conan) but I honestly find it better. On that particular detective/mystery category, Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo is what I truly believe to be underrated. It ran for about 3 and a half years with a total of 148 episodes but only the first 13 has been sub'd.

Hell Teacher Nube is probably one of the most underrated anime series of all time! Almost 12 years have passed since it ended and no US production company even wanted its license up till now (seriously?!)... thus there's only 15 sub'd episodes out there that you'll find. Damn, this is one of those supernatural horror-comedy series that I really loved back when I was a kid and I really would love to see it again preferably with English subtitles of course!

GONZO, the company sucks at making adaptations and everyone knows it. But that doesn't mean I'd immediately diss everything that they have to offer. I'm even still watching Shangri-la just to prove a point. Its plot has evidently become economical... and despite the animation, I somewhat find it interesting. I haven't seen Gad Guard however.

Abenobashi - underrated so it seems but aside from being a Gainax's work, nothing really stood out. The plot may have been average, but it was epic nonetheless. It was pretty invigorating to watch. For having quite a similar theme, Shounen Onmyouji comes to mind...

I'd like to mention Baccano!, simply because whenever an anime recommendation topic comes along, nobody even mentions it. It's an amazing and awesome series consisting of fated and chained events albeit unrelated (to begin with) between a number of immortals who's been existing for more than a century etc, etc... as its title, in Italian, translates to "RUCKUS!" It was adapted by Brain's Base from an award winning series of light novel. This is truly an awesome series I tell you! WATCH IT IF YOU'VE GOT NOTHING BETTER TO SEE! (keep in mind that it has 16 episodes, 3 of which are DVD bonuses)

While stuff I didn't yet see started popping out I'm definitely gonna agree on some that I know:

Planetes : A frigin flawless series in every aspect which you only truly learn to appreciate after it's over. Excellent notes from users but still pretty much covered with the sand of time.

Baccano : Never heard a bad word about the series (apart from maybe a bit hard to follow story) and yet (just like hermit said), it rarely got mentioned afterwards even though skillfully combining many genres with great audio-visuals and a buttload of style.
Oh, and it has Chane :D It don't get more win than that.


I wouldn't hoverer agree on Rahxephon and Outlaw Star being underrated. They may carry the somewhat unjust burden being ripoffs (or at lest trying to steal the spotlight) of Evangelion/Bebop but that very reason (along with excellent production values for their time) scored them fairly impressive fanbases.
BTW - few people notice that OS is actually a bit older then Bebop and still spout ripoff bshit. Hard to compete with a legend I guess...

Well then, these are three anime i recently asked a friend if he had seen, and he hadn't heard of them, and after watching he was pleased with the outcome, now i ask my fakku brother, what say you to these three

Neo-Ranga: found if very easy to take in since in was 15min episodes, but I don't see a lot about it, is it cause of its release/air date? is it old already? Or am I missing something.

Shigofumi: I don't know what it was but this hooked me in and never let me go, still a mystery to me why, but I am so glad i found it

Bokurano: Is this mainly just cuz GONZO had their hands in this?

And Ennis to boot! :D

Nice mention, Shigofumi: Letters from the Departed is definitely a good series if I do say so myself. It was kinda like Jigoku Shoujo just more heart warming rather than dark, which likewise highlights human nature. Damn, how could I have forgotten about this?! It gives me the chills every time I recall some of my favorite episodes; the first couple and esp the tenth (about the artist and the loli Fumika) made me tear up. It's indeed underrated. Btw, make sure you don't miss its bonus DVD episode (13) - "Thereafter" :D

Neo-Ranga and Bokurano... considering my disposition regarding mecha themed series, it just doesn't interest me that much. And in spite of Gonzo, I did give Bokurano a shot but it didn't quite work out for me.
