Anyways, I feel somewhat obliged to defend Bokurano here. While I find the claims of fucking up an awesome manga valid, let's face it, a very small part of anime audience has ever read it's respective manga. Having said that, I really think the series shines as a stand-alone, representing the oh_so_very_rare good Gonzo. To each his own though.
Shigofumi while still good, kinda took a nosedive after the first few eps.
Cum to think of it, quite a few shows I've introduced on anime-specific seem to fall into this category. Kurozuka, Tytania, Bokurano, Terra e ...
People dunno what they're missing.

they're both small funny series with heaps of references only an otaku would know
Cosplay Complex (i seem to be one of the only few that know and like this one)
and
Doujin Work (perhaps a little more well known, but still as funny as hell)
Then theres one of the most overlooked of them all.
(and come on its not THAT bad, at least not to deny its existence)

Like others, I think some of the anime you guys mentioned are totally underrated.
Hajime no Ippo - props to those who pointed that out
Gunparade series - very underrated in my opinion, good call
Erementar Gerad - I liked it, and I think it's underrated
Shounen Omnyouji - underrated, I have to agree
Major - for a baseball anime, this is totally underrated
If I think of anymore, I'll post em' here.

It's an amazing and awesome series consisting of fated and chained events albeit unrelated (to begin with) between a number of immortals who's been existing for more than a century etc, etc... as its title, in Italian, translates to "RUCKUS!" I don't consider Baccano an underrated anime. On the contrary, I think it might be an overrrated anime, but that's just me. One of things that will turn people away is the anime's use of various characters with disjunct storytelling. Unless one has the patience and logic to sort it out, most people would be dissatified with it, but I can understand that too.

Baccano does indeed seem to be appreciated and highly rated. All the more strange that you rarely see discussions and blog topics sparked by it. Hell, our own topic in anime-specific would be a dead zone if you removed all of tsujoi's posts.
Also, @icecreamsalad - I wouldn't call Shingetsutan underrated. It's just kinda old but with good and numerous reviews/votes. The reason why it's existence is sometimes 'denied' is because it took too much freedom with the original vn story and packed stuff too tightly. Something that gave me and PD some nice luls in the past. A splendid anime BTW :D

erementar gerad-it was kinda dull, the style and quality of the fights weren't very epic enough to be a decent shounen and the romance was generic. if it was anything like negima (manga-anime suxors at least the negima neo adaption was good) then i would loved it
my choice?
bosatsu tenshi dokuro-chan-underrated because of how short it is
8 15 min episodes for the first season and a 4 15 ep second season.
not because it wasn't good but because it used a SHIT load of lulzy material in those few eps (to the point it ran out of the really good ones to use)...by using only high caliber humour it had to be short.
oh and to add Negima!?..not negima! but negima!?
where it adapts the neo storyline-animation was so smooth, acting is wonderful and pacing so masterfully done. I'm disapointed they didn't do that FIRST for Negima! but now that i think about it, towards the start of Negima! akamatsu was still in "love hina" mode.

I agree with Azreli here. Just how is Tenchi Muyo underrated despite being one of the MOST PROMINENT harem anime?! If the third OVA didn't put a wrench into the works then I could maybe understand, but as it is now ...

Time to throw another title out there, "Starship Operators," I am not sure how many of us actually watched it, Hermit? as always your opinions are encouraged and welcomed, but seriously I don't know many ppl that saw this series, its a 12 episode Space/drama thou 12 episodes doesn't allow much drama and character development, it does cover most if not all the bases, and my favorite thing about this is major spoiler

Lol another serious that sits in the back of my mind collecting dust. Yeah, this is an underrated series. It was pretty good and the ending was quite sad. But we all know sad shit is good... Like Clannad. :D

Fuck know why, but I've dropped it after 2 eps a few years back. Maybe it's time to reconsider ... Space dramas are usually my favorite playgrounds.

Made me remember something too - Soukou no Strain. While I do addmit I don't remember the series that clearly anymore, I'm pretty sure it didn't do anything to deserve mediocre scores and low attention it got. Nice space drama again, couple of mysteries, good body count, lolis, nice visuals and very impressive opening episode. Guess the advertisement devision failed bigtime since it's ranked #934 on MAL's popularity ranking.
Also something quite unique but still way above-average from my point of view - Red Garden. They might have gone over the top with that artistic approach and I myself have found it difficult to watch at times but apart from that it was a very good, emotional series. Kinda like Gantz but approached from a completely different angle. I found the early scenes with the main heroines conveying their saddens and despair through singing especially awesome.

I've watched both Starship Operators and Scrapped Princess.
I wasn't too impressed with Scrapped Princess, and I've yet to finish Starship Operators, which I'm beginning to find the entire premise ridiculous, fighting battles as entertainment with many political strings behind it. Of course, I'm not saying they aren't underrated, but I wasn't too happy with these series.
Another series that comes to mind is Busou Renkin - it has everything good from shonen spirit to Jun Fukuyama's voice-acting (seiyu behind Lelouche FYI) and a good plot... but I don't hear people talking much about it, expecially since it was created by the same mangaka as Rurouni Kenshin.

Not Kenshin good, but it deserves praise, for sure.
One more underrated series (I think) - Crest of the Stars, and the subsequent sequels. It's a sort of a space/romance thing, but there isn't too much romance, which is usually the problem with romantic series. The characters don't swoon every five minutes about being in love or have long conversations about how they feel about each other. They don't look away embarrassed because of some silly situation in every episode.
Also, chick with blue hair, and it's actually blue. It's not artistic license or anything like that. Her hair is genuinely blue. And that is a huge turn-on.

The second time around the animation was worse than I remembered. The story relied on a fair amount of cliches. In all honesty, I thought that aside from Sara's development in the early episode and the deal with Emily, it wasn't anything particularly worth remembering.

Zoids Genesis: I honestly liked this one. It was a bit odd, but it had decent action and plot.
Zegapain: It is as licensed as an anime can be, but it was interesting and had a unique plot.
