Guts from Berserk and Shinji from EVA.
Both of their psyches remind me of...me. Not the sword swinging badass and the crybaby EVA pilot but rather their fragile sides; They have been through so much pain and emotional trauma that it gradually wore them down into their current state. Eventually their senses have become dull and scarred. That pretty much sums up my current status in life.

Kirei Kotomine.
This man is, in all sense, what it means to be an "antagonist".
I'm talking "this guy will make you doubt yourself and your actions while giving the truth that hits home, giving almost no room for a rhetoric or an answer."
He will stop you. He will question you. He will give you the answer you want, but you will curse yourself for ever hearing it.
He holds that villainous side that just loves to watch what your goal in life is,
and see you fail. He will fight you. He will put you down. And like every fantastically sadistic villain, he will mock you in your weakest moments.
AND HIS VOICE.
HIS VOICE IS ALSO GODLY. HHNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
THAT DEEP, SINISTER, PROBING VOICE THAT BOASTS DECIBELS IN HIS AMUSED AND DEVIOUS CHUCKLES.
ANTAGONISTS SHOULD STRIVE TO BE THIS MAN.

Himura Kenshin from Samurai X Trust and Betrayal and Rurouni Kenshin. How can you not like Kenshin? The assassin with the heart of gold, and a reversed blade sword just in case.

Younger Toguro from Yu Yu Hakusho. Just because he has muscles the size of minivans doesn't mean his brains a peanut. He basically planned out the last half of the Dark Tournament with the only unknown variable being whether or not Yusuke could step up to the plate. Throw in a tortured past and a dash or everlasting remorse and you have the perfect tragic anti-hero, but they dodged the cliche by sending him to hell so...awesome.
Vegeta- King of the comebacks, putdowns, oneliners, and dick moves. To bad he never gets to kill the big bad.

I have a few favorites. I'll run by why I love certain male characters.
Kazuma Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho is probably by far my favorite character in existence. He's what I would call the epitome of pure manliness. To put it simply, when he kicks ass, it matters. No other character in the show comes close to how manly Kuwabara is when kicking ass. He always does it for a good reason, particularly when his friends are on the line, and when he needs to make a statement about his ideals. This is a character you cry for when you see him succeed, because you know he fucking earned his victory. And voiced by Christopher Sabat? You can't get better than that.
Sakurai Tomoki from Sora no Otoshimono is a character I don't understand why people have any reason to dislike. He's probably by far the most accurate anime portrayal of what a normal hormonal male teenager is actually like. Sure he gets into perverted adventures, but it's anime. It would kinda be less cool if they didn't do something unusual to make it a story. But anyhow Tomoki deserves love because he's completely honest with what he is. This is very unusual for harem-type anime given the number of COMPLETELY UNREALISTIC male protagonists that plague the genre. Completely unrealistic as in almost emotionless and pretends to have 0 sex interest or be otherwise gay. Tomoki is a god among men because he doesn't hide this part of him ever. He goes out an seizes what he desires. Sure he deserves a karate chop to the back of the head for going too far here and there, but he still deserves to be respected for not ever faltering on his goals. And when you actually get to know him better, he demonstrates that he's perfectly capable of being mature and thoughtful as well. He's a complicated and well developed character that really just is perfectly executed for the type of story he fits in.
Masa from My Bride is a Mermaid is another dude voiced by Christopher Sabat. He's probably by far the best example of how to execute The Excessively Cool Side Character. He's got shades, a manly voice, never trips, does things logically and efficiently, and everything he says is always right. You can't really get more cool than him. And he gives no damns about sexuality, homo or hetero. His pure unadulterated coolness makes him just universally sexy, and you can rest assured there's nothing wrong with seeing him that way whether you're a guy or girl.
