Hmmm. I'm seeing a lot more melancholy in this thread than there should be. Although I dislike the way Fakku is handling its public exposure, not everything is gloom-and-doom. But the benefits of the way Fakku has headed isn't instantly apparent either. So anyways:
Remember that this is one of the first times hentai has had even an inkling of a chance to be published and released wholly in the west, with proper translations and east-to-west corroboration. I can't think of a single time that hentai has gotten this kind of exposure and support, from either a western company or Japan. Wonderful authors/artists that were never seen outside Japan are now published in book form and we have simul-published hentai from their magazines. I don't even think Japan has access to most of their uncensored hentai from their magazines (but correct me if wrong). All of this is a monumental undertaking, and is good for hentai in the long run.
That may be hollow comfort for those familiar with years past, or those [unable to/not wanting to] pay for a subscription for all content, but hopefully with more support and trust from the artists and licensing, we may see more affordable subscription services in the future and/or more hentai may even be made available for free. Official live-action porn websites have paid streaming services of their videos. Months later, however, those same videos you paid to see in HD are licensed off and are able to be streamed on free websites, with ads and other stuff bringing in revenue for the original streamers of the content. Now, hentai and live-action porn are LEAGUES apart in similarity (from publishing and licensing to their distribution), and obviously there's no way to know what will happen, but I just wanted to bring up a comparison of what hentai COULD go through to what IS happening with live-action porn (a stable medium many of us may be familiar with). It's difficult to understand at times that we can only enjoy free porn in other mediums because of how those things are produced, supported and licensed. Hentai has nowhere near the level of exposure or support as live-action porn, and it is why hentai was mostly enjoyed as a pirated hobby.
Another comparison to make is to Music downloading and Anime streaming services. Don't want to waste your money on a full CD for only one song? Then people pirated what they wanted. But now with cheap, individual sales of songs by Apple and Amazon, etc., there's more incentive to just pay a dollar for a song you adore. But with anime, it was a bit different still. Anime was mostly seen in a pirated medium because there were NO streaming services for it! DVDs for anime were also atrocious, costing hundreds of dollars to own a season, depending on the anime. Even when Netflix, Hulu, etc. started streaming, they didn't have ANY anime, and it was like that five and more years ago. Even Crunchyroll, when it started, was pitiful in how much they were able to stream. However, now we have simulcast episodes of anime on nearly all legitimate streaming services, and now there are entire libraries of anime to view. That was a monumental change that only really came about and progressed because of the notice people gave anime, the demand for a consistent and legitimate market in the west, the reworking and deals of licensing, and so much more that I'm not even knowledgeable enough to explain. Even anime DVDs, which have always been a diminishing market due to streaming, are now dirt cheap ( a series sold for $200 dollars on dvd a few years past can now be found for $20 blu-ray).
Hentai has never had the kind of support and recognition as all the aforementioned mediums described. And so it is going through its own growing process now that it's starting to be a focus by both east and west who want it released worldwide. In time, it may become affordable enough for everyone to enjoy comfortably, but right now it is a fledgling in a precarious position. I'm not demanding everyone to throw money at the screen for payed porn, but I just want you to keep your mind open and understand the wonderful opportunities hentai have been given, even if those wonderful things aren't yet apparent. Be patient, have some faith in hentai and those trying to get it released worldwide, do what you are able to do to support hentai without needing to sell a kidney for rent, and of course, always keep your love of hentai close. Take care!
This right here sums up everything very neatly. Very nice job.
