Just because someone agrees with someone else doesn't make it stroking their ego. There's also the fact that even if you have opposing views it doesn't need to turn into an argument, you can just acknowledge that fact and move on without trying to change the other's opinion on the matter. Just because you discuss something and don't agree doesn't mean it needs to be used as a way to change the other's mind.

Very, I would say. Due to my personality I happen to be good at finding privacy and well, when you're bored and there's no good argument going around, the hand just slips in. Just today the count reached 7 or so.

So boring indeed. I much prefer having to think my way to understanding. Or having something to admire.

Agreeing to disagree, if it happens before an argument, is just cowardice to have your ego stained from being shown wrong. Pray tell, how else do you improve your understanding? Socratic method is good for a reason, which is made excellent when another mind is involved because you can only doubt yourself within reason so far before hitting a wall.

Nothing in particular. I just noticed myself erect at times and oh well, such a hassle. Get rid of it, continue reading/writing/studying/being bored. A good majority of my faps were just boredom.

Who said anything about your ego being stained? If you can't put your ego aside with friends then who the hell can you with? I'm not saying arguments or trying to sway someone in a direction is something that should never be done. I'm simply saying that not every conversation needs to be about bettering yourself or others intellectually.

Not everyone finds debates and things of that nature as fun as you do Mibu, so there's generally got to be more to conversations between people than just that.

It's people that are contradictory. The statement isn't. You SHOULD be able to put ego aside for friends. But many people can't.

Well, ok. But you haven't provided a plausible case of a conversation without arguments, which, at the core simply involve differences in thoughts, that is meaningful.

Never said arguments shouldn't happen. Only was stating not every conversation had to be one. Not everything someone talks about needs to be about mental stimulation or improvement. Sometimes people just like to do things or talk without using any logic or real thought and just say whatever comes to mind. -shrugs- If you don't agree well then that's your opinion, that's what this whole thing is about essentially anyway.

Well, I agree on that part. Though, it seems to simply branch to either engaging in a meaningful conversation, or meaningless one.

Which is similar to the distinction I drew earlier, pleasantries and arguments. I have provided a case of a meaningful argument and while I accept that there is such a thing as meaningless argument, that has to do with the reasoning of its participants and not about the nature of the argument itself.

However, you disagree with my claim that pleasantries are by definition meaningless. And that intrigues me, and I would like to know a case of conversation that is not an argument but is still meaningful.

Depends on your definition of meaningful. To me, this conversation is meaningless. I'm not trying to convince you of anything really, just talking to pass the time and speaking my mind on the matter. I have nothing to gain or to lose really, but I'm having it anyway because it's interacting with a friend which I can find enjoyable. There's no meaningful result from this conversation out of some personal joy. If the friend gains joy out of it too that's an added bonus.

And I never really said I disagreed with your statement about pleasantries, I just didn't want to hear about you jerking off =_= lol
