Yesterday, we already provide the information about Yukari Yakumo and Maribel Han. Now, i ask you .. Do you find something cheesy ? Despite their appearance and abilities ?
Now let's get to each point to strengthen this analysis, shall we ..

Physical Resemblance

Both Yukari and Maribel have same long blonde hair (even though Merry's shorter). Not gonna say much considering body shape because ZUN apparently didn't care much about it. But one thing we can be sure is .. ZUN put a lot of effort to designing clothes. (no sarcasm)

Clothes

In PCB, Yukari wears Red and Violet. You can look at here
In her appearances (in Music CDs), Maribel always used Violet as her dress's primary color. Take a look at the links Rinpe posted here for your information.

Nature

When Maribel sleeps, she dreams that she is Yukari. When Yukari sleeps, she dreams that she is Maribel. Because Yukari is nocturnal and is known to sleep during the day, neither of them would normally be awake at the same time. (extracted from wiki)

Rinnosuke can tell the name of any object by looking at it, and then know the purpose of that object. Apparently, this can be applied to living things too, and he can even tell why the name was chosen. In CoLA 25, Rinnosuke uses his special ability to realize that "Yukari Yakumo" is a name that Yukari chose for herself.

"Historically, there is an article the Youkai Encyclopedia from Aichi's Gensokyo Chronicle seems to be describing her. She is said to look the same now as she appeared back then."

"Seems to be describing her?" Aichi's Encyclopedia was written 1200 years ago. So apparently, 1,200 years ago, Yukari didn't have her name yet, because Aichi wasn't able to give her a name back then. We know she was named Yukari Yakumo by the time she invaded the moon 1,000 years ago, though. Or rather, that she had named herself Yukari Yakumo. After all, this is the incident that made her famous. Later, Rinnosuke discovers a device the youkai built in preparation for the moon invasion where the author signed with the name, "Yukari Yakumo" (Curiosities of Lotus Asia, chapter 21).

With that being said, there open a possibility that one day, Maribel will change her name to Yukari.

Maribel's Story

* Ghostly Field Club

Quick Summary : Maribel and her best friend Renko try to find the entrance to the Netherworld in a graveyard, but aren't able to. Afterwards, Renko gets a new lead on a special place and suggests they go to the Hakurei Shrine instead.

At the shrine, Maribel dreaming about Gensokyo.

* Changeability of Strange Dream

Quick Summary : Maribel dreams she is in a strange world (obviously Gensokyo). Visiting several places, met Sakuya and Mokou, and take something as 'souvenirs'.

Afterward ..
She asks Renko for advice, and to prove that she isn't lying. She gives Renko the objects she found in her dreams (Cookies from the Scarlet Devil Mansion, Bamboo Shoots from the Bamboo forest, and a piece of paper from the Bamboo forest). Maribel comments that the dreams are bad dreams because they always end with her being chased by monsters. However, if she could make it into a good dream, it would be better than her current reality. (THIS, clearly something that can be used as the motivation for Yukari/Merry to create Gensokyo)

Apparently, according to Changeability of Strange Dream, the future is a place where kids don't smile (Part 1) and all the food, such as bamboo shoots are artificial (Part 4).

* Retrospective 53 Minutes

Quick Summary : All about Renko and Maribel with their discussion about nature of dreams and illusions. Only that, no more no less.

Still, this story is revealing that Maribel lives in the future (The 53 subway stations of Japan are referred to as a thing of the past).

* Magical Astronomy

Quick Summary : Maribel and Renko hear about moon tours being held. Maribel has seen the boundary on the moon where a special hidden world exists (The Moon Capital, with the lunar rabbits, etc). She and Renko really want to go in order to check it out. They discuss several things about the moon and other concepts such as the moon's immortality elixir ( Renko states that she'd totally drink it, explaining that it's really just removing your own boundary between life and death and thus not the curse people make it out to be), before finally realizing that moon tours are expensive, and they won't be able to afford to go.

As the two look at a fountain's lake, and see the moon reflected in the water, Maribel comes up with an idea.

"Well, Renko. If the Moon Tour is too expensive to go, shall we consider going there by another way ?"

and the story ends ~

Cliffhanger, amirite ? Actually NO.
Clearly stated in Akyuu's Perfect Memento and in Silent Sinner in Blue.
Let's just quote WHAT is Yukari's preferred method for traveling to the moon ..

"It is said that she once invaded the moon by modifying the boundary between truth and lie, and plunging into the mirrored moon on the lake's surface."

Right. From the ending of Magical Astronomy : Story, we can safely assume that Maribel's powers are awakened. Though she may can manipulate boundary and use that method^ to visit the moon. If that's the case, then Maribel really did gain Yukari's power ( and going from that, the possibility that she became Yukari, herself ).

Nope,
ZUN makes it pretty clear that Gensokyo is actually a separate world, and not Maribel's dream. Maribel just THINKS it's a dream. She even questioning that perhaps the outside world (her current world) is just a dream (she practically begs Renko to help her figure out which is actually real in Changeability).

and my first experience with touhou was on my old laptop i started to get into it but i actually never finished it because i had to reformat that laptop at the time and i just havnt really gotten it again cuz i dont have the time but i'll eventually get back to it lol

Oh, I definitely have to use bombs. Sometimes I get so nervous when playing and then get myself in a really tight spot so. But, I've learned to relax some when playing so that's helped a lot.

And yes, I read the articles about the two human girls. I would have figured that their would have been more humans around, but oh well. They seem like a neat pair. I wonder if any of the Youkai would like to pull pranks on them while they were out hunting for the paranormal? That could make for a funny 4 koma comic.

And yes, I just finished reading your article on Yukari Yakumo and Maribel Han. That was really intense stuff. After reading the article, I definitely think that their is some kind of connection between Maribel and Yukari. From their similarities in appearances to Maribel dreaming about Gensokyo and being Yukari, I definitely feel like they have a deep bond. Maybe Maribel is an extension of Yukari's being, and Maribel was created in order to make sure that the balance between the human world, and the world of Gensokyo, was kept in balance? Maybe that is why Maribel has such a deep desire to seek out the youkai and such, (i.e, keeping after the human world in Yukari's place)?

Or, maybe the article is correct in stating that Maribel will become Yukari. Maybe she will find some connection to Gensokyo someday, and that will cause the transformation to occur? Maybe the future Yukari is just trying to guide her in her dreams?

At any rate, very interesting stuff. I love reading about theories and speculating about them.

Well, I don't think I'll be really active on the forums from now on. Not that I was already that active... I vowed that I'd practiced piano a lot more and to get better for the next semester since they're going to give me a piano room and I don't want this chance to go to waste.

And yes, I'm learning Touhou songs at the moment and they're really hard ^^U.

I doubting this theory because i never recall that Yukari have any love for Human world. What's happen in the outside won't affect Gensokyo any as far as i know. With that being said, i see no purpose for her to create Merry as her representative in Human world.



Most likely. But if that's really the case, I wonder what happened to Renko.
I doubt that Merry dare to leave Renko alone, and as we all know .. Merry going to Gensokyo or not; It's optional. If she leaves Human world for Gensokyo then it means she has no reason to stay in Human World anymore.

If anything, I think Merry's reasons to leave outside world for Gensokyo would be:
1. Her ability grows stronger causing her to be a dangerous person, so she had to leave;
2. Something bad happened to Renko;
3. She decides to live in Gensokyo with/without Renko.

I don't think she is that selfish to leave Renko alone, so yeah.



Even if her ability grows stronger. I don't think by leaving Renko will do her any good. With her power, we can safely assumed that she can bring Renko to Gensokyo through the gap. Leave her in the safest place in Gensokyo and Merry is free to quarantine herself in the remotest place within the boundary after that.
Even though their relation won't be the same. They still can live in the same world, and that's whats matter.

I do have the same opinion as well.
And that can explain why Yukari is fond of Reimu. (Despite Yukari's puppet play)

Who knows .. maybe she look at Renko inside Reimu ?

Still, i think this is a sad story for them.

In my personal opinion, Maribel is the "Man Behind the Man" for Yukari.


Most likely, the entire Gensokyo exists as Maribel's dream.
