In same way, Yukari's desire to protect Reimu might be repressed desire of Merry's to protect Renko.

Judging by fact she studies psychology, I'm willing to assume she has quite the problems.

There's also an interesting pun regarding Yukarin's surname.

Mmm, that is always a possibility. One of the wonderful things about Touhou is that it's open to the interpretation.

Ahahahaha, it true. I did the same thing when I was doing my psychology classes. (I use the term loosely because it was a highschool course, but on first-year university level.)

Hehe. I did the same thing when I took my high school course as well. College, less so.

Indirectly, you are saying that Gensokyo is Merry's playground. A playground that she didn't really aware of it.

Yet, she has her own self in Gensokyo named Yukari Yakumo. Her mature and stronger self in the playground whose job is to look at the place that subconsciously created by Merry.

Frankly speaking, Gensokyo is an illusion ; an interpretation from Merry's desire to have a place where everybody can smile ; a better place to live ; In the very short and neat explanation, her own playground.

There's a concept in psychology called "Shadow".

A "Shadow", is basically an opposite of our characteristics. We might not be aware of it, just as Maribel is not aware of Yukari.
I'm getting an image of Maribel being somewhat sheltered and dependent girl, which would make an opposite of Yukari, wouldn't it?

She also sounds delusional (not in as "locked-up-in-hospital-clinically-ill). If Gensokyo is a land of dreams, and specifically of dreams she desires, she might not to choose return.

In a way, Gensokyo works on "clasp your hands if you believe".
If Maribel acknowledges Gensokyo as a world (alternate, real, doesn't matter), than Gensokyo will definitely exist. And she won't be able to return from that, just as Renko said.

Gensokyo might exists, but I don't see anything pointing that it exists in same manner as our world.

Maybe Maribel didn't create Gensokyo, but her desires would certainly keep it going.

EDIT: To world it better, what I would want to say, that it's more a case of Gensokyo being a Reality that Maribel (or, human desires for things they subconsciously desire, but consciously reject) had projected an keep them in some inter-spatial limbo.

The Music Cds all talk about (only) Renko and Maribel's story, and their each interpretation about what is that "another world". There is no point that imply Merry was sheltered person or everything along the lines.
If i do mistaken, please correct and direct me to the prove that she is sheltered.
