She is the current "Child of Miare" (御阿礼の子), who is born in the Hieda family once in every few hundred years with the ability to "not forget anything she sees" and record Gensokyo's history. She seems to like red tea and FM Synthesis music.

Despite her young age, her memory goes back 1200 years. It is because every "Child of Miare" of the Hieda family is a reincarnation of the previous "Child of Miare", who inherits the memories of the previous incarnates. She is the ninth reincarnation in the line. It seems that no one but herself and Yukari know this, though she does mention part of it to Reimu during Memorizable Gensokyo. Each time she reincarnates her life span gets shorter and shorter, and each Child of Miare works on a written record of Gensokyo's history called the Gensokyo Chronicle. Perfect Memento in Strict Sense is the edition of this record that Akyu is writing.

Bunbunmaru Trivia

# "Akyu" is probably a pun on the Japanese word for 'nine' which is read as "kyuu" (since she is the ninth Child of Miare). Hieda means "millet field".

# The "Miare" in "Child of Miare" presumably refers to Hieda no Are (稗田阿礼), the oral historian credited with helping compile the Kojiki, Japan's first written historical record.

# As seen in the Colophon of Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, the names of Akyu's previous incarnations as Children of Miare (Aichi, Ani, Ami, Ayo, Ago, Amu, Anana and Aya) are all puns on numbers, with Are standing for zero (零, rei).

# She has a vague resemblance to the midboss fairy of Lotus Land Story's fourth stage and Mystic Square's third stage.

# A common nickname for Akyu is 「あっきゅん」 or "Akkyun" similar to "Yukarin" for "Yukari." However, its resemblance to the "dokyun" of "DQN," which means "trolling and/or being stupid" (due to a popular TV game show in Japan), has led many to joke that it is "AQN."

# Related to that, Akyu has a another persona named “AQN” whom is often depicted as a Yukkuri-basher in some fanworks. Her weapon of choice is a hammer which is occasionally plastered with “AQN” on its head. Use your imagination to how she uses it.

Aya Shameimaru is Gensokyo's resident reporter, known for writing "slightly" exaggerated news articles about anything that happens in Gensokyo. She's very strong and is probably stronger than she shows since she sometimes "accidentally wins" battles while only meaning to cover a news story.

During the events of Phantasmagoria of Flower View she sets out to cover what promises to be an interesting news story, apparently having had completely forgotten that the exact same event had occurred 60 years ago. Even though she was alive and around during the previous flower incident, perhaps her memory is clouded by the thousands of facts and rumors she hears every day.

When Aya was sent by the other Tengu to see who the intruder on Youkai Mountain was during Mountain of Faith she was surprised to see it was the heroine. Although Aya doesn't want to fight the heroine, she prioritizes her bosses' orders. She decides to "go easy" on the heroine and leads her to the new shrine, believing that the heroine could get rid of a large nuisance to the Tengu.

Perfect Memento

- Main place of activity : Mountain of Youkai

- Aya Shameimaru is a crow tengu who is considered to be quite fast, even among other tengu.

- She flies around Gensokyo with her camera in hand, and when she finds an interesting event, she leaves with a few pictures.

- She is never seen without her fan, her camera, or her bunkacho.

- Her fan is a tool that allows her to summon wind; one sweep of the fan can blow over a house, two sweeps can blow over a large tree, and three sweeps can cause a traveler's cloak to fly away.

- Her camera is another powerful tengu weapon which can capture a moment in time and display it as a picture

- The pictures she takes are later used for her newspaper articles.

- Her bunkacho is a tengu notebook where she writes down material she thinks could make interesting articles. It is filled with innumerable photographs and handwritten notes.

- Her wind manipulation power is a very straightforward ability that allows her to create and suddenly stop winds, as well as creating tornadoes.

Bunbunmaru Trivia

# The characters for Shameimaru literally mean, in sequence, "to shoot (an arrow)" (or "to shine into/onto"), "command, decree, order" or "life" (or "hit/target" in the word　meichuu (命中)), and "circle" (common name ending, usually seen in names of crafts and swords or similar weapons). Aya means "text, sentence, literature", and it's also the first character of "Bunkachou".

# The name Shameimaru is derived from Sha-Mail (ShamÄ“ru → Shameimaru), which is text messages with photos, very appropriate for a fast-travelling journalist who takes pictures.

# Aya runs the Bunbunmaru Newspaper.

# Aya owns the Bunkachou (文花帖), a tengu notebook gathering innumerable photographs and handwritten notes. Bun (文 - can also be pronounced as "aya") means "sentence, text", ka (花) means "flower, blossom" (or "pretty, cute thing" in a figurative sense) and chou (帖) means "notebook": therefore Bunkachou literally means "notebook of flowering sentences"- her record of interesting observations for Bunbunmaru Newspaper articles and pictures of beautiful danmaku or cute girls living in Gensokyo.

# Aya is on less than good terms with some of the other characters. This is not necessarily because of her personality, but rather because of the news articles she writes about them, which are filled with as much of her own personal opinions as actual news. When she publishes things like "Reimu just seems to be a laid-back drunkard" in her newspaper, it's no wonder many other Gensokyo residents are less than thrilled to see themselves in the news. Nonetheless, that comes from her very inquisitive nature and a tendency to exaggerate events, rather than the desire to corrode other people's reputation for the sake of it. In fact, she has developed ethics and goes out of her way to pursue the truth, sometimes to a fault.

# A silhouette of Aya occupies the front of Shoot the Bullet's jewel case.

# ZUN once commented that the gaming concept of Shoot the Bullet was around since the same time he created Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, since such a game required a camera-using character. Aya was created specifically to fit that purpose.

# In Mountain of Faith, Aya is the first stage 4 boss in a Windows game not to have some sort of gimmick/variation based on the playable character (i.e. Patchouli's different spell cards in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Reimu or Marisa in Imperishable Night, etc.)

# Her depiction in Strange and Bright Nature Deity and Curiosities of Lotus Asia suggest that her newspaper isn't well received, and she is willing to jokingly trick Reimu into believing in a fictional type of ghost to boost its popularity.

# Due to Aya including photos of various characters in her news articles, some fan comics portray her as having a habit of taking embarrassing or risque photos as well. Thus she is sometimes a joke character that's shown as a pervert.

# Although Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red described Aya having black wings, you cannot see them in the artwork of Shoot the Bullet and Phantasmagoria of Flower View. This lead to confusion in many fan works, as many artists took liberties on this subject. Various theories have been made regarding the wings, and the most commonly accepted explanation is that Aya can magically hide her wings when they are in the way.

# In both Mountain of Faith story modes, Aya was seen to say "Ayayayaya" (あやややや) which has become her catchphrase.

# In Touhou Hisoutensoku, she has a palette that resembles Ranka Lee from Macross Frontier.

is the Second Official Touhou Fanbook. Compared to the first, Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red, it is quite serious in tone; focusing mainly on factual information about the world of Gensokyo.

Synopsis

Here we see Gensokyo from the perspective of the (almost) normal human Hieda no Akyu, a recorder of its history. Her descriptions show a quite different realm; one where things are described in terms of †˜threat levels’, and most Youkai are to be feared and avoided rather than laughed at. Nevertheless, it is revealed as a strange and wonderful place.

akyu the only person in Gensokyo that can remember. Even she bumps into you one day, she'll remember you till next year. she'll remember the date, the time and the location. Pretty awesome huh?

Though i am not sure that there is somebody in Gensokyo (Touhou Girls) who are not fitting this criteria.

Synopsis

Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red (東方文花帖, romanized Touhou Bunkachou, meaning Oriental Cultural Album), the first official fanbook of the Touhou series, is written by ZUN and drawn by Kususaga Rin and some others. It features Aya Shameimaru writing a newspaper about the Touhou world, with some comics and newspaper articles. It also comes with a music CD featuring tracks from PoFV.

ZUN felt it incomplete to have a Touhou without a shooting game, thus he released a title marked as installment 9.5: 東方文花帖 ~ Shoot the Bullet for Winter Comiket 2005.
