Are Mecha a feasible alternative to tanks.

you say most mecha are 40 ton range. but not for Gundam.

while the tanks has the power,the valkyrie has the speed. so it wont get hit since the valkyrie also using the ability of it's pilot.

Hey on page three of this thread, you'll see couple of youtube links, an suffient(uhh too sleepy to remeber right spelling) advancements in tank tech can help em hold their own against mechs.

And plus you're automatically assuming that people wont go lolwhynot slap on gundamium metal onto tanks, change some specs around and install more powerful engines and guns, and voila, a gundam tank zomg.

The gundam doesn't replace the tank, sure it is typically a better combatant, but that is because the tech basis is askew and because it is an elite and rare unit, it still doesn't replace the tank at all, so I don't know how you are claiming a gundam victory but whatever, you've already proven yourself to be quite delusional.

The Veritech fighter is just that: a fighter, it replaces jets and has the ability to assume an ultra-heavy infantry role or a fire support platform, as well as being a heavily armed fighter jet, it does not replace tanks, of course the tank goes out of style since they are employing an ultra-fast military at that point. The Veritech wouldn't replace the tank at all, it just replaces everything else. Please note that the Veritech is also using alien tech which also breaks the tech curve.

The point behind this entire thread is to compare the qualities of both vehicles the mech and the tank on EQUAL technological basis.

On an equal curve basis, A fully functional mecha would be the equivelent of a FMP M9, side-by-side with a Covenant Wraith.

On that scale, tanks would become massive fortress-type fire support, while Mechs would replace infantry for all but urban combat, for which Appleseed's Landmate units would be used.

I don't think the future of the tank is to become bigger, while it will be a fortress I see them shrinking a little bit, since it is easier to transport them over, but yeah they will continue being what they have always been, mobile fortresses with a lot of firepower (admittedly the first tank didn't have much fire power until later on but the first boat designed for war also had no ranged weapons so meh to that.) I always thought the Scorpion was better than the Wraith, then again the Scorpion only had a better gun, and the Covenant were quite incompetent on the ground compared to us. The landmate would replace infantry except for super close quarter combat which would be handled by normal people in lower grade powered armor. I suppose the mech could work in as ultra-heavy infantry, the primary reason to continue using infantry is because they have the fastest response(for example a squad runs around a building behind the infantry someone spots them they all turn around and hose the squad with lead, a tank would have to turn its turret which could take time they don't have.) time of any unit, but you take that away when you involve a machine that big, that and infantry is good at clearing buildings and not wrecking the building or destroying cars in the process.

No, when I referred the wraith, I was talking it's tech. Plasma morter, heavy-duty organic metal shell, and anti-grav propulsion.

The only reason the Scorpion was better was because, on a HP basis, straight shots > curved shots. On a real world basis, plasma mortar > tank shell.

Mecha are Large Metal Infantry. It's essentially a soldier covered in metal. All the benefits of infantry, with the added protection of a hard metal covering.

While I am personally in favor of a Veritech-like multipurpose unit, one cannot deny the efficiency of an...ugh...Gundam.

The humans won because the Elites switched sides, this is partly due to what the prophets did to the Elites in Halo 2, what the Gravemind said to the Arbiter, when he and the Master Chief got captured by it, and because the Chief is a total badass, and the Elites were tired of him blowing their matches off, it also doesn't help that Elites fight like fucking morons, superior physical ability loses to skill every time in firefights.

Tank shells will kill a tank in one shot no question, assuming no error on the gunners behalf, a plasma mortar can be avoided by a good driver and commander telling him where to go. Neither vehicle can survive a single straight impact from the others weapon.

I also like the veritech, the gundam suffers from a lack of being able to whip around and shoot someone that a guy in powered armor has (not to mention the size issues.), as well as the ability to go through normal sized buildings, only gundam I ever see do that was the Deathscythe, and that is because Duo Maxwell is an asshole, only he could sneak aboard a well guarded satellite and hide a giant robot inside a building without ever being noticed.

The funny thing too is, as you both probably know, the Covenant also stole technology. As Halsey said, the are "Imitative, not innovative."

If I may propose a new possibility to the argument. Given that medical technologies have evolved along with military, would it not also be possible to create a soldier akin to the SPARTAN IIs or even IIIs from Halo, given no gene pool is needed. It combines power armor with a physically superior person. With enough armor and other shielding. So, couldn't a super-soldier of such a kind utilize his/her small size to exploit a large mech's dead zones and attack the pilot directly? As for power armor like Landmates in Appleseed, if they went up against a super-soldier, it would boil down to the soldier and his/her tech. I believe a modified person in a man-sized suit would be a nice alternative, bu that is only given that medical tech progresses in such a fashion.

Well, yes it is theoretically possibly but most mechs I have seen don't really have blind spots. The winner of the Spartan vs Landmate battle would be whoever had the most skill, which considering how horrifying spartans are would probably be them, they used to beat up their trainers who wore landmate grade armor (after the spartans accidentally killed 3 trainers in practice bouts) and this was before the spartans had their suits, they were wandering around in a cave wearing skin tight black bodysuits, which when they asked the lead trainer he could only respond "I have no idea where they got those suits." however Spartan IIs are freaking rare and the only ones truly worth mentioning, since the Spartan IIIs mostly got themselves dead they weren't as well trained or equipped, they got those lousy scout armors which don't really provide much protection aside from stealth, which only worked at long distance so really it was fuckin useless all things considered, I blame Ackerson for that, thankfully he got his in the comic book.

Creating Spartan IIs is totally possible, most of those procedures would probably work given time and effort (and potentially a real life Dr. Catherine Halsey) The big point of using landmates would be to give the spartans extra mobility and combat capability (tougher, bigger guns, roughly same speed) but a spartan wouldn't fit in a normal landmate it would have to be bigger not much bigger but still bigger, since the Master Chief himself is 6'10" outside his suit, and he is physically average amongst spartans, it is his wonderful brain that makes him so awesome.

We are down to milling about with powered armor, or at least I think we are. Although I think I won the argument about mechs not being feasible. I'm pretty sure one or two are still convinced in their own little worlds though.

Veritechs are better than tanks by the same token that a F-22 raptor is better than a tank, by virtue of having a really high speed and the firepower to crack a tank open, also because the tank will never be able to elevate it's gun high enough to shoot the F-22.

I addition to that, the Veritech would have missile guidance systems similar to the Apache's Longbow system, so they could hit a tank easily without ever presenting themselves a target. See: F-35

For the SPARTANs, Kais. I must agree S II beats S III any day, but then again I don't think Ackerson had survivability in mind when he made them.

S2 were the Hero units. Hell, they took down a warship in Fall of Reach with only three Spartans. Well, they lost one, but still.

Do you know how many ship kills the Chief has? 1 Fall of reach 1 Halo 3, countless in First Strike, and god knows how many that aren't in text, not to mention 2 Halo's and the place where the Forerunners were going to make their last stand.
The missile guidance system on a Veritech would be more advanced since it would be made of more advanced tech, you would probably disperse sensors similar to what they had in Outlaw Star, basically camera's telling you which direction your enemy is coming from and you would be firing missiles around corners and crap like that.

Meh we are missing a few technologies to make the Veritech missiles, most of it just means spending the time and money to develope which wouldn't be very long but it is money we don't want to spend on replacing something that doesn't need replacing. Vectored thrusters, a different fuel source and explosives package(modern missiles are overkill anyhow) and that's basically it, the modern missile has enough firepower to bring almost any plane down in one good shot, the exception to this rule is the monster they call the A-10 since it is designed to take stupefying amounts of punishment and keep going, even then a direct hit to the cockpit will stop it but little else will.

Personally I prefer radar guided missiles, but laser works too. Theoretically (assuming the FOF were turned off, the FOF is a friend or foe recolonization system in the form of a signal transmitted from our vehicles.) a radar guided missile could turn around on it's master but the parentheses explains why this doesn't happen.

Though I am a big fan of Mecha I agree that they have no feasible use in a gravity enviroment they would come about from need in zero g
