Maybe he's right about the tech tree.Sooner or later mechs will be upgraded. Also tanks would also be nice to upgrade.
In Europe there was an owner of a tank that uses it like it's normal vehicle. He was allowed by the government to drive his tank in public places.Colored the tank Light blue.
In US there was a rampage tank that shove through the highway destroying vehicles along the way.
I think that rampaging driver was you Kais.hehehe.
I was 16 when that rampage happened, I'm also smart enough to not drive it backwards while drunk or over a highway divider at an odd angle.
The Vehicles in Appleseed are viable , but as a commander I would use them as a heavy trooper, you know like the people of Appleseed did. That still doesn't replace the tank. A mech being able to land a foot on a tank would be an impressive feat, it wouldn't crush the tank at all though, especially since the average tank is powerful enough to travel at 2/3 speed with a tank on top of it (don't ask how I know this, mistakes were made by other people, and the details are classified.) 100 years ago the Nuke wasn't an impossibility it was a dream, there is a difference, a vague, and not entirely well defined difference, but a difference nonetheless. The same with most of those other things you described (the plain being a true exception), especially boats, man has been making expertly crafted boats since almost before we had a language with which to communicate. I am looking into the future and I see a lighter more mobile force, large walking mechs which are slow and kind of clumsy, are not the future and since the tank is fairly fast and only as clumsy as the idiot driving it I see know reason you would want to replace it with something that relies on bipedal locomotion, because it is easier to damage and at best the vibrations of walking are horrendous at that scale. When the Mech gains a Jet pack, then it is taking on a different role from the tank it is more of a shock trooper than a tank as they will probably lighten the armor to get more use out of the pack.
I have looked forward and the only viable designs either cheat or are only a step or two above powered armor, or actually are powered armor. None of which replace the tank but replace something else altogether. Now if they make a miracle material that is durable enough to take tank shells and light enough to not fall apart when walking, you could invest in developing gyroscopes, and motors, and lighter sensor packages since you will have to be able to see in a 360 arc, and a better engine for mechs or you could make better tanks. Think about it this way: the modern military won't fork over the cash to buy their troopers better armor, what make you think they are going to spend all the time, money, and manpower researching and developing those technologies?
