Would you find it needless still if the above exceptions I listed were the case?
I dunno, it's a bit hard to find an abstract, generally applicable rule for this. Generally I'm lenient enough to say "as long as it's vital for the girl to feel comfortable with her body I don't care". So, every woman (and every man) should have "the right" to do with their body as they please.
And yeah, I'm aware of the fact that mastectomy can be a traumatic experience for a woman, and I would never deny her the right to get an implant to rectify her situation. If she feels that she can live with one breast without it seriously destroying her sense of self-worth forever, she shouldn't feel pressured to get an implant either. Her body, her choice.
Buuuut. The exorbitant boom of plastic surgery in the last decade is really bothering me. Like, women getting their breasts, their noses, or even their labia (!) operated on to conform to some nonsensical ideal. Or girls going and getting their tibiae and fibulae cut in half, a piece taken out, and put back together because they consider themselves "too tall". I find that greatly unsettling, both from a psychological, a social and a medical point of view. Surgery is never a sinecure and should not be undertaken lightly. And, as cruel as it sounds, it's a waste of capacity.
