Yes, there is quite a difference, but as time moves on new things do as well. We have makeup, dye, jewelry, piercings, clothing - now what else can we do to make women look more perfect?
That's the mentality basically.
(As a side note: Male teenagers are increasingly subjecting themselves to plastic surgery too, heh! I acknowledge that it's a general societal trend, but that doesn't make me like it one bit more.)
I also dislike make-up and piercings personally, as I prefer people "au naturel", and I have met
one person in these 27 years on this mortal coil who was able to pull off make-up right. But, whatever floats their boat - if it helps their self-esteem, so be it. I dunno if everything can be blamed on direct social pressure, though; take jewellery, for example. Some people just like to dress up, or show off their wealth and status; not
necessarily a push to make people look more perfect.
I don't ever want to reconstruct myself unless it's by my own natural way (losing weight from eating right and exercising) for example.
I'll die happy being wrinkly.
That's not only a much healthier attitude, it's also bound to make one end up less of an embarrassment to one's surroundings than all the thrice-lifted 70-year old fogeys with 50-kiloton make-up and heavy fake-gold bling and revealing neckline.

Oddly enough, the first thing that came to my mind when reading this was Bioshock and the splicers. They wanted to look perfect yet ended up looking horrendous.
First thing I thought of was Berlusconi, heh. That man has Botox for blood.
