I love dakimakuras, I have about about 5 dakimakuras, 3 of which are rare comiket and such ones. I just won an auction for a C79 Kuroneko dakimakura as well, so that will make about 6? I only go for "official" ones, or ones that have official art and such. Doujin ones just don't cut it for me :/
I would also like a detailed how-to-maintain thread on dakimakuras if possible. Plus, I asked about this in the request but I guess no one that is interested in dakimakuras went there: what's the best kind of dakimakura body? There are plenty of dakimakura body brands out there, but which ones the best? and by "best" I mean which one has the most "filling" (so to speak). Once I ordered a Cospa dakimakura, but I was disappointed when I found out its filling was nowhere as fluffy/full as my ToAru Misaka/Imouto Comiket dakimakura.
Which ones do you own, if you don't mind me asking? :o
I like seeing how different artists try to portray a character. It also doesn't hurt that unless the property is an eroge or some such, that covers who use official art tend to be on the tamer side, where doujin covers have a lot more artistic freedom in terms of explicitness. There are some characters I don't like to see a lot of changes too, but for the most part, I'm willing to give any rendition a chance.
The thing I dislike about covers with official art the most, generally, has everything to do with image quality. Limited run covers available at Comiket and the like are generally and exception, but a large majority of the "mass market" official art covers that you see on Hobby Search/AmiAmi/etc, are fairly lacking in comparison to doujin covers. Of course, there are exceptions in quality on both sides of the fence. However, covers that I've picked up from a larger source have had weird scaling problems, often with the background receiving more space than the character, and don't seem to be as crisp or detailed as doujin covers seem to be.
That's a fairly good question on bodies. Honestly, I've spent so much time collecting the actual covers that I've neglected picking up too many bodies myself. I agree with you that the Cospa pillow is a disappointment in the amount of material it has stuffed into it. I do find it a fairly comfortable pillow, though... it would just definitely benefit from more stuffing.
