Internet Socializing. What's the point?

Have you ever wondered if there is a point to your social life, your internet one?

Aside from killing time, do you think there is anything that socializing on the internet really does for you? I know that you can build a reputation and make friends hehe, but unless you make it known who you are and what you do online (outside of the internet), does it really matter once you leave your computer and are doing things in real life?

I've been beginning to wonder if everything I do on the computer, aside from serious business (no pun/meme reference intended), just kills time and does nothing else for me. It's like.. I'm letting my life slip away from me by wasting time online.

Discuss? Hehe.
What are your thoughts on the issue? Is using the internet really beneficial to you.. if nobody really cares all that much about your opinion and how/what you think? And finally, do you think people really care about what you have to say, for more than a minute or two?

ehh (>_<) honestly I do agree with you. . unless you have one of those "work from home" jobs ive seen 100x on television. Take your relationship with everyone on [size=10]FAKKU[/h] for instance, aside from sharing hentai it's really not a accomplishment, Unless your planning on meeting up with someone from this site (not recommended) but ANYWHOOOOOO

Im not against it however, I consider it fun to meet people online & discuss various opinions & share thoughts, Though the day I leave [size=10]FAKKU[/h] & all other sites mostly all ive done online up until that point will have been useless. It's more of an "enjoy the moment" kinda thing for me

I think that's exactly it.. we're having fun. Maybe.. I had all the fun I can have.. which is why I'm asking this now. I might have finally become bored with the internet and feel a need to move on. I rather do something that has a point and helps improve my life outside of the internet.. but I guess even things outside of the internet can be just as pointless. :(

Well for me that's easy, it entertains me. Having the possibility to talk to specific people makes me enjoy myself, and that's basically what I seek when going on the computer.

Having fun doesn't always have to be productive for me, if I had fun while killing time then I can say that time was well spent due to the fact that I was genuinely entertained.

That's a bright way to look at the situation. As long as you're genuinely happy.. it's probably worth it. Hehe :3 Nice thoughts on it. TY.

As for things outside the internet being pointless, that is also true, some things have no real purpose. . .like standing alone at the bus stop, walking the dog, eating cabbage, etc. Well if you dont get too bored of us old internet folk feel free to send a message, im always looking for some smarties to talk to ok Nina-chan? Socializing is one of basic needs of humans. That includes internet socializing too I believe.

Socializing in real life, like playing pool together, playing balls, shopping and other kind is basically "killing time" too and have purpose to fulfill your social needs.

And about people care or not care about your opinions and what you have to said. Doesn't real life works like that too? Sometimes...maybe even always?

I'm not saying internet life = real life, but because two of them already similar enough I always separated those two in different category in my life.

Maybe its because Ive been socializing on the internet since the 8th grade but I personally take the opinions of others seriously and the relationships on the internet seriously. I see no reason not to since we are all human behind the pc. Ive never understand the people who just say "It's the Internet no one cares" Some people care and others don't. That is just how it is. Ive met my fine share of both. It takes both to run the internet.

Internet is plenty beneficial to me. There's nothing to do in this town and all my friends are moving away.

Well for me the point is 1) to have fun 2) to learn stuff 3) To keep informed about new shit (anime, games, etc.)

Meh, I'm not ashamed to admit that most of my life is my internet life. I don't really shun the real world, but I admit I have much more fun on the internet and chatting with people I meet on the internet. It is just as "real" to me as the real world. It is just so much easier to meet people with the same interests, and to be able to bypass the awkward time everyone has when they first meet someone face-to-face.

It doesn't really matter to me if my deeds in the real world mean nothing here, or if my reputation and accomplishments on the internet mean nothing outside of it. I have more fun on the internet, so why not socialize and make the best out of the experiences as I can?

And add the fact that most of my other friends are at other colleges, internet socializing is the next best thing.

Disagree strongly. I have met many people who stimulate me intellectually and I have met some of those people in real life. No matter what type of encounter I have with people on the net I always take something away from the experience. And as far as just surfing in general I seem to pick up some interesting fact or read a good article every time I'm on. So no, I feel the internet is a good use of my time.

It helps me vent out frustration. Sometimes just writing down my problems and getting out in the open helps me feel better even if nobody reads my posts.

I honestly think that everyone matter regardless of who they are (even the guy above me....maybe) and that my internet relationships go a bit above just general chitchat. I like talking to people, I like learning about their opinions, if you feel you have been wasting your time you sure made me consider some things about my life I may be only one random jackoff but at the same time isn't it even the slightest bit fulfilling to talk to someone who puts value in your opinion?

I just realized that I don't chat with people. I just leave comments that express my opinions on the various topics here. I guess I don't have much of a social life on the internet. Wish I could chat with people.

I have the exact same opinion. I too learn alot from the internet.
Also, I like the serious conversations that go in Random and SD here at fakku.

I find that to many people, internet socializing is a good way to have fun and meet new people. Whether you meet the person in real life or not, they are still human beings behind the screen. At times, it may be better to lean on an anonymous person rather than a real person.

Sure, the real life is great and you can actually reach out and touch the person but I spend a lot of my time on the internet with those same friends anyways. While others are out for 4 hours having fun, we can do the same for several hours on end and into the night while enjoying even more games and activities on the web. Some of the people that I've met here are great and seriously it doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it.
