No, it doesn't most of the time. One important part of a relation ship is personal contact. In rare occasions it could work, but usually they have to be within a few years.
It depends how much you care and trust the person. If your someone who gets jealous quick over anything then maybe a long distance relationship isn't right for you. But if you seriously love someone, distance won't matter to you - you'd just have to try hard to seriously make it work.
i think it is very hard for it to work frankly....not only you have to have willpower but your partner has to be wholehearted and commit to you, as you can see nowadays humans have weak willpowers unlike a few generations ago so I think the cases that a long distance relationship work are very rare
